Rust

My 11 month old 2004 Alero is rusting! it's on the trunk and all down the sides, little rust spots are forming all over the car. Has anyone else had this problem?

The dealer will not do anything about it since it has not rusted through, but said to fix it the car would require a complete paint job minus the bumpers and hood!

How many miles/kms does it have? It should cover corrosion for a while, then rust through for longer. Mine (2000) is rusting and they won't fix it because it isn't rusted though, but yours should still be covered under corrosion, unless you have a lot of miles on it.

it's a 2004 with about 30,000 miles roughly, not sure on the conversion.

it's under the 3/36 warranty, but they still want cover it. said because it has to rust from the inside out.

That sounds like BS. I'd take it to a few other dealers and ask, then call GM direct and ask if it should be covered.

I'd send that pic to GM with your VIN number and rase hell. Its a 2004, a new car. misslindseysue is right though, take it to a few dealers, might not get an arshole somewhere. gl

ya I took it to another dealer and he said that too, that it was plastic. It's definatly rust though.

What happens is that metal particles in the air have landed on my car, they are caused by brake dust, railways, etc.

CN railway was doing a lot of maintenace on the tracks by my house so that might have caused it.

basically what happens is that these metal fragments land on the paint on the car, and then those tiny peices of metal rust. It's called Industrail fallout.

So thats the good news, the bad part is that to remove it you have to by a chemical that is not available to the general public. He said that you have to get a shop to do it and quoted me $300 bucks to do the entire car.

I am concerned about what the chemical will do to the clearcoat, but it cant be anyworse then it is now.

um have you tried wax? buffing it would take it off for sure.

yea, if its that stuff use some good wax and elbo grease. Maybe invest in a polisher/buffer.

wax will not take it off, I waxed the entire car when I noticed the rust spots at first

its right in the clear coat.

the chemical you use to take it off is highly corrosive, I cannot find anywhere that even sells it.

i have some spots like that on my car and on the bumpers confused wit it being on the bumpers but mine is not that bad

i have a spot of rust on the wheel whell lip i will be makeing it look like it was rusted throgh by fileing it so it is not strait and letting it rust and boom i get it fixed.

I doubt if buffing it would work, the rust is right in the clear coat, it eats away at it so you need something that actualy takes up a bit of clear coat.

I got the bug and tar remover so i'm going to try that, does not hurt to try these cheaper methods first!

I know people who've had some good luck with the paint cleaning clay for this.

Man that’s what GM calls rail dust or something like that. Its from when that transport the cars by train and the dust eats in to the paint it will cause little rust spots. That is cover under GM's under corrosion warrantee 6/60 for rust. They are just being A-holes. Call GM.
Is it just the back or is it all over.

Ok this might be of help to you. Its in the users manual. It should solve your problems.

"Chemical Paint Spotting
Some weather and atmospheric conditions can creat a chemical fallout. Airborn pollutants can fall upon and attack painted surfaces on your vehicle. This damage can take two forms: blochy, ringlet-shaped discoloration, and small irregular dark spots etched into the paint surface.
Although no defect in the paint job causes this, Oldsmobile will repair, at no charge to the owner, the surfaces of new vehicals damaged by this fallout condition within 12 months or 12,000 miles (20000 km) of purchase, whicher comes first."

Cliff was dead on. Use a clay bar (~$10 - $15) like blue magic before you try anything else. You need to remove the contaminants before you buff anything.

Crolero - 12mo or 20km whichever comes FIRST. He's up to 30km already so he's out of luck unless someone is in a really good mood.

head over to www.detailcity.com (http://www.detailcity.com) and ask the guys there for a little help. I'm sure the first thing they will tell you to do is clay and then polish (with a random orbital buffer like the porter cable). If you get the PC, look at spending about $200USD for the buffer + pads + polishing supplies. You can definitely fix this yourself, but ask there for help first.

or you can go to autozone and buy some Touch of paint in the color of your car and just clean the spot and paint over it, its what i use when i get litting dings in the front of my car so i just touch it up. they have almost every color that GM made. i found bronzemist so it shouldnt be hard to find "GM black"

This poop just started happening to my car not to long ago and now i'm in my 12 month and i just past 12000 miles, is there anyway i still can get them to fix it?? Need reply fast going back to the dealer later today

Is this covered under any section of comprehensive in an insurance policy? Just curious, I know someone who had their car painted from industrial fallout and the insurance covered it.
