Got a '99 3400 v6 'ho I'm supposed to look over at work (in a VW shop) and its got a wandering gas gauge so I'm gonna replace the sending unit. Need to know if this is possible to do without being a GM shop. One of the Isuzu guys next door told me on their 99s with the GM engines that the sending units need to be programmed. Is there some "basic setting" or calibration involved in replacing the sending unit on our Aleros?? Or can I just drop the tank and go to town??

i dont think there is any recalibration needed, why would you need to anyways? ive replaced a fuel pump in a newer van and its the same style, and positioned the same on the tank.......we just replaced the fuel pump and it was all good......but to answer ur question i dont think there is anything special u gotta do......but wait to see if anyone else has anything 2 say

he's not replacing the fuel pump, he's doing the sending unit, and ya thats kind of a common thing to go out on alero's. and i still dont think there need to be any programming done anyways. could be wrong, ill try to find my haynes and see if it mentions anything in there about the sending unit

i know but the sending unit is on the fuel pump so its basically the same as swapping out the fuel pump as far as the computer see's it......

Turns out the car has too much other stuff wrong (low trac light coming and going, intake maninfold gaskets leaking, LR window inopt, cracked belt and windshield, lock cylinder in driver door spins) so the car is not going to be fixed  That's too bad I wanted to replace it all to get experience working on these cars. Oh well life goes on. :beerchug:
