View Full Version : Trunk Light Wiring

I am ordering some cathodes from oznium this week, and was gonna get the white dual 12" kit to put into my trunk for some improved lighting. I want it to replace the stock bulb, so the cathodes will turn on when the trunk is popped.
Anyone got any ideas as far as how I should approach this? It seems all of the wiring is run between the trunklid and other metal, so I'm not sure how I should get at it.

You may be able to remove the cover but I've gotten to them this way: Remove the back speaker shelf and there will be two big ole' contacts for yer + and -. I have the coupe so this was a bitch for me but I hear its easier for sedans. Just look for directions on replacing Rear Speakers in the howto forum.
(edit) I can take a pic of what it looks like if you want

Ok, as long as I know its reasonably possible, I'm gonna go ahead and order the lights.
I'll search the forums and find out hot to get the rear deck lid off, I have a sedan so maybe I am in luck.
Thanks.

Thats good you have a sedan. The rear window trim in my coupe was easily broken in two (thankfully small) unsuspecting spots.
Do you have a link to the lights you are trying to get?
Like I said I can snap a pic by tomorrow just say the word.

Don't know how much power cathodes draw. If it is a large draw have the trunk light wire switch a relay. That wouldn;t draw enough to hurt stock wiring.

Here's a link to the ones I was going to use in the trunk.

I think cathodes draw about 1/2 an amp, so the two of these would draw 1 amp. I'm not sure what the stock bulb draws but the bulb number from Sylvania is 211-2.

they work fine.. mines wired into my trunk light wires directly. they're both orange wires.. the one with the strip on the wire is negative. I don't have the factory trunk light no more though. I have 2 sets of cathodes on it.
I wired mine easier with my rear speaker deck was off.

I wired my cathodes this weekend. All I did was pulled out the entire housing of the trunk light. It's not hard and I can't really explain it but you have to push in on the edges and it just drops right down. Then just undo the harness and wire up the cathodes.

What color cathodes did you use, and were you happy with how they looked in the trunk?
I don't want to order them and go through the hassel of installing them to find out they weren't what I was expecting (although I do think it will look pretty good).

I used red cathodes. They're alright but they just don't have the red color that I was looking for. I'm probably going to be replacing them with white.
