brake dust fixes?

Does anyone have any good ways to keep off brake dust or clean it, if i dont wash my car for a week i spend atleast an hour cleaning all the brake dust off my rims, any suggestion would be helpful.

I feel your pain, I have 9-spoke wheels in the summer.

I use wheel cleaner on the wheels, and a big sponge, that seems to work the best. I can't remember what brand it is, but it comes in a blue bottle. Maybe I'll look when I get home.

yea it sucks, my rims turn like black in 4 days and then i just sooooo dont look forward to the hour i get to spend cleaning them off, anyone use those brake dust shield things? if so how do they work and how do they look?

I have that problem too. I needed to replace my brake pads and my b/f did it. We went to Autozone to get the pads. The guy behind the counter gave us some prices...I wanted the better pads. Damn b/f didn't want better he wanted cheaper. Guy behind counter told me that the cheaper pads create alot of dust. Well I didn't listen to him. So know I need new pads again (has been about 5 mo.) and I have so much dust my car tires probably look like they smoke. Anyways maybe thats why you have so much dust. :)

Go to a ceramic pad, or the green ones that don't make visible dust. Those brake dust shields work, but they don't allow as much airflow to your brakes and they look like crap.

Tell the bf to spend the money on the better pads--it will pay off unless he wants to keep doing your brakes over and over again.

DEFINATLY spend the extra cash and get the better pads, they usually wear longer, and give a better feel, as well as usually creating a better friction quotiant (you stop better) and less dust...
I have the stock brakes on my alero still.. i cant wait till they wear out.. so i can get some better ones... cus they suck

ya i cant wait to get new rotors and pads!!!!! i hate my brakes!

I use Turtle Wax Heavy Duty Brake Dust Cleaner and protector. I apply it every six months to maintain the protection. When i wash the car the dust comes off with very little effort, just a light scrub with a brush and its clean. I also find there is less build up on the wheels.

Well i could prolly get a cheep set for like 20-30 dollars... canadian...
so a good set for like... 40-50ish... and a good set of rotors at about 60

blk03gxs, the stock brakes do suck...being that i have 40,600 some odd miles on my car and i'm replacing those with aftermarket power slotted rotors and brembro brakes. Yes they suck.^^^

So what rotors are better.... slotted or cross drilled? Doea anyone know if it is expensive to get these on?

id go with slotted, i herd that cross drilled are no good cause the drilling is done after the rotor is made and can weaken the rotor. where as slotted happens in the manufaturing of the rotor.

correct me if im wrong.....

For any braking that we'll be doing with our aleros.... slotted will be more than good enuff, the big thing is that yes the cross drilling makes the rotors weaker, however usually how they have gotten a bad wrap is from ppl who drive honda civics... and buy really really cheep ones off of ebay... they just cant last...
plus also with large wheels and open wheel designs the heating and cooling of like rainwatter can create weaknesses in the rotors
Your best bet is slotted :thumbsup: thats what im going to get when i do the binders on my aler-hoe

I would like to get the slotted rotors for my car, but I'm afraid of them warping out like the set of brakes I just put on around 6,000 miles ago. I got ceramic pads and non-OEM rotors (not sure what kind). Has anyone gotten the slotted rotors only to have them warp. I was told the main reason the rotors warp is due to a run out error. Also read that it was a good idea to have the brake setup "greased" to allow the sliders to move freely so the calipers aren't grabbing but can instead slide smoothly. Any ideas?

the only ones that ppl consistently report warping are the stock one. I don't know of any other brands that have that chronic reputation.

Powerslots are pretty proven not to warp. Tirerack sells them and so does PFYC.com. Keep in mind though that slotted rotors will cause your pads to throw more dust. Definately upgrade to ceramic pads.

Also keep your wheels polished and less grime will stick to them.

Unless you are doing some kind of road racing or auto-x, you don't need slotted rotors. As a matter of fact, I do both of the above, and I just have aftermarket Bendix OEM replacements from AdvanceAuto, coupled with powerstop 9-1-1 pads. I have had no problems, and it was a huge improvement over stock.

Now, if you are just going for looks, then, I'll have to agree, slotted / cross drilled look better. BUT, slotted will eat up pads faster. Cross drilled can be a problem when the holes are drilled, but if they are cast with the holes, then the integrity of the rotor is not compromised.

So basically, your decision depends what you're trying to achieve with them.

I got the Brembo rotors and EBC pads from Tire rack and they'll have you washing your wheel every 3 days!
Since I got the new wheels, I polish them too like Naich does.
You can wipe the dust off with a soft cloth after that! Cleans up easy.
Don't get me wrong, the pads stop great, they do dust pretty good though.
