Last week I woke up to see my Alero in the drive way with 4 slashed tires and every panel keyed deep. Long story short my insurance wrote the car off and won’t insure it till I can have it painted or paint it myself. The quote I got for repainting and repairing is over 7,000 because of all the body work needed. So I am wondering what are some of the better names are out there for clear coat and paint. I was also wondering how much paint I am going to need to paint a 4 door? I have a paint booth lined up and all the tools. I have sanded whole car down and it in primer now with a cover on it, so the faster I can get it to paint the better.

 wrote it off/wont cover? nice insurance.
anyways....
Pittsburgh or is it PPG? Good brand. Sherwin Williams isn't bad. If you wanna do it much cheaper though, there's always Krylon...heh heh.
Check with your local CarQuest paint store. They usually have really good lines.

As long as you get a quality paint it'll be fine. PPG is usually the easiest to find, Dupont would be second (at least in this area). There's also others such as Spies-Hecker, Sherwin Williams, House of Kolor and BASF. It's not so much the brand of paint you use as it is the amount and quality of preparation you do.

Well it takes about a gallon to paint a car. With BC/CC you need a gallon of paint, a Gallon of clear, 1 3/4 gallons of reducer and a quart of hardener.

This is for PPG
I am assuming you car is black (from the pic) so you can go with DBC 900 (< don’t quote me on the number) witch is black. Then a clear I would use is DPU 2021 CONCEPT 2021 Clear its good for some one how does not paint that often and that what the body shop will probably use. You reducer depend on you temp your painting it DT 860 (60-70) DT 870 (65-80) DT 885 (75-90) and DT 895 (85 and up) and you hardener I would use DX61 good all around hardener
For all that I would say it will cost about 300-600 depending on were you go if you go with PPG.
Any questions just ask.

PPG, House of kolor, dupont. If i was you i would go with house of kolor and you need about a gallon of pant for a good paint job. sorry about the car thats gotta suck.

Yah I have some pics, I will post them a bit later when I get on my office computer. The cuts were about 4 inches each but thats enough on a black panel to need to paint the whole thing because of the fading.

Question... After sanding the car down or a panel do you have to use something under the primer or just spray the primer on and sand it? I noticed there was a layer of clear coat then paint then what I would think was a primer gray and then a even darker gray primer or something. Just wondering what the last 2 coats are, and what is good prep?

A gallon of mixed paint maybe, but not a gallon of un-mixed (that can make 2 gallons or more depending on the paint). Also, you don't want to use the "universal black" because that's most likely not the right color black for the Alero. Go by the paint code which is on the underside of the spare tire cover. More than likely the "universal black" will look too grey compared to the original (had that problem on a Jimmy, the factory black had a lot of red/brown in it)

I've had good success with the DBU paints and the stratoclear clear coat, both from PPG

I am not painting the car black again, not really sure what color its going to be next I think thinking blue, green, or red right now. I am in the process of taking all the black off the car and preping the car for paint. This brings me to my next question. You sand the car with a very fine sandpaper so the primer is nice and smooth right? Am I missing any other steps? I am also going to mold the Z3's into place. Do I use filler or fiberglass to do this?

That sucks man. Sorry to hear about it. So the insurance company just totaled it and you bought it back from them?

The insurance gave me 5,500.00 for the alero and let me keep it so I think I got a good deal. I only wish I had room for my car in the garage but I don't so that’s really not an option. I am installing a video cam outside to watch all of our cars. This is the 3rd time we have been hit in 6 months; I really want to find out who is doing it and have them put in jail.

My alero is just a project car now. I went out a bought a 2004 RX8 6 speed as my daily driver, noting but good things to say about it. Now I can do all my own work to the car and save on the steep labor rates they charge to do things over here. Creative Customs was charging 90/h to weld poop and they did a poopty job at it and I have to fix all there short cuts.

If anyone is from the DC area or anywhere and is thinking of using Creative Customs don’t they are rip off scam artists.

And they stole the air caps lol. I should go car to car looking for them. I think they were trying to sink the car down so it would be slammed and cause alot more damage. They even tried to cause damage to my breaks, but I guess they didn't have time or something. Just pisses me off someone would do this to someone elses car.

yeah thats so f***ed up in so many ways, if i were you i would do everything i could in either putting a bad ass alarm on the alero and rx8. or try your hardest into squeezing that car in the garage, and storing stuff elsewhere.

i also use ppg dbc system since it came out the dbu system is over 10 yrs old and it`s still good but old technology
dbc is a much thicker and the metaalic is much more finer then the dbu system
it also lays out much more flater then the dbu does
now what you forgot to mention is the fact that you can also use dx57 which activates the base coat ratio is 1:1 to 5% dx 57 also when you do graphics you must use dx57 to gain film build thickness for the graphic to stick as well
if you use a heated paint booth must go by the 15 degree rule i mean by is if the booth is set at 75 use 85 temp reducer so on and so no
so being that the dbc system is not and does not use a reactive reducer that`s why you use the dx 57 to activate it and it also becomes chip resistant
dcu 2021 is a great clear and great for complete paint jobs BUT if you haven`t used it before or it`s amatuer hour at the oke doke coral you will run the hell out of it
ratio is 4:1:1
flexed 4:1:2:2 using dx81 the flex agent

ppg is a great product but where i am from it`s not no 300-600 bucks
this si from a body fender tech of 10 yrs
