View Full Version : Engine All Clean

I've never cleaned an engine in any of my cars before so I thought I'd give it a shot. I used a citrus cleaner/degreaser because I wanted it to smell good while I was doing it  I wiped everything down that I could reach with a paper towel, lol. All I can say is what an ugly-ass engine. :)

http://img295.echo.cx/img295/8592/engine40yx.jpg
The hood insulation is ripped and stained and falling off and it looks like poop :glare:
Anyone wanna tell me where I can get a new one? I looked around and all I see is people thinking about getting a new one but never where they got one.

Put some color under that hood girl!
smlzalero
06-05-2005, 09:49 PM
I thought about painting the valve cover the same blue I got for my calipers, but I dunno. I didn't realize it was a vital part and I won't be able to use the car with it off, so it'll have to wait til I have time off & no place to go.
I also thought about blue looming like yours but..... there's next to nothing to loom, LOL!

smlzalero
06-09-2005, 07:35 PM
Mmm, I think the thread's been going on for a few days now. lol
Not too long, you just squirt the stuff all over and let it sit, then rinse it off and run the engine for bit to let it dry, then you spray it on again and run the engine again to get it dry and shiney. It depends on what kind of engine cleaner/degreaser you get, though. Some you just spray on & rinse without reapplying it. I'd say not any more than 2 hours for me since I cleaned everything by hand as well after degreasing & rinsing.
Oldsman
06-09-2005, 08:24 PM
far as high heat clear. i use POR 15. it is the best out there. expensive but it will never yellow and you can brush it on and drys with no brush marks. it is is good for 400deg. you can even wetsand and buff it.
oh fyi on the Gunk citrus 2 stage cleaner.........the citrus has a tendency to cause paint to krinkle. so be carefull with it.
smlzalero

So I decided to polish the IDI cover (?) which I was calling the valve cover before, but I've been informed that's not what it is. (Although I was right because the valve cover is underneath it. :P )
I'm going to polish the ridges and the lettering while leaving the valleys and flat area around lettering cleaned but unpolished.
I haven't decided yet if I want to paint the valleys blue yet or not. I thought that would bea nice touch of color.
Any thoughts?

i would paint the valleys. all polished doesn't look the best being it is a pain to get every where. but if you paint it and let it dry for a few days then go back with a dremel and polish the tops it will look sweet.

Damn your triple-posting! :P
So I shouldn't polish them first then wipe the Paint off? I figure if I polish the tops first there's no having to be careful around the paint with the dremel... (lol, I have bad luck when it comes to tooling around painted sufaces)
Oldsman
06-13-2005, 02:18 PM
either way will work. even if you polish first and paint then wipe off you could screw up. you still need to go back over it with a dremel to bring the luster back out.
so i would say do this process...
sand 220, 400, 600, 800 grits
polish with dremel
paint
wipe off the tops
let dry for a couple days
repolish the tops

OK, so this is gonna take longer than I thought because I can't decide what to do.. I messed around with sanding and poop today.. what does anybody think about the "brushed" look?

brushed would look good with valleys painted.

Here's how is is so far. I stil have to take the paint off the lettering. The 'brushing' doesn't show up all that great in these, but the ridges and the flat part (as well as the lettering) are 'brushed'.

Well, polishing was not coming along at all. It looked like ass because all I have to work with is my dad's fake dremel and it sucks so I decided to go with the 'brushed' look as it was something I could do by hand :thumb:
smlzalero
06-16-2005, 10:51 PM
Well, here it is. I ended up stripping the paint off the lettered area and masking the letters individually. It was a bitch, but I think it turned out allright :) Tell me what yall think.
I can't seem to get a pic that shows the 'brushing' well.

Question... how'd you take it off to do all that? It was probably mentioned and if so, I guess I overlooked it.

^ How do ya take off the cover that says "2.4L TWIN CAM"? It's super easy :) You just take off the 4 1/2" bolts (right on top) and the 2 10mm ones that hold the 2 pipes that run along the right end (I find this helps a LOT with removal & replacing it) and then unplug the plug that goes into that end under the pipes. Then it just pulls up off the plugs.
When you go to put it back on, make sure to take the black rubber things that go between the cover & the spark plugs and put them on the cover before you try to put it back on.
If you need clarification just lemme know :)
cutelilcntrygrl
06-17-2005, 07:10 PM
Yep it was easy. I was able to take it off in about 3 minutes. I'm broke and have nothing to do this weekend so I'm gonna clean it up a bit but instead of using blue, I'm gonna try something different. I don't want to be a copy cat :P

1 Q for you: did it start after you got it put back together? I got mine together and it wouldn't turn over. :o I couldn't figure it out.. then I saw the plug to the alternator hanging there :P I can be such a retard

What color are you doing yours? And just in case you didn't know, it's painted to look like aluminum.. so you might look for chips and whatnot. I just stripped it all off mine. If you're just painting all of it you might not care, but if you want to polish or do like I did you'll want it off there. :)
cutelilcntrygrl
06-17-2005, 10:01 PM
How on earth did you get yours soo freakin shiney?? I've been sanding for 45 minutes and barely got the top part done.
Color? I haven't exactly decided yet. I'm thinking a combo between black and red. The only thing that's gonna be red (not bright red) is the 2.4 twin cam part. The grooves are gonna be black as well as the top and around the 2.4 part at the bottom. The rest is gonna be polished. That's what I'm tossing around in my head though. What do you think?
smlzalero
06-17-2005, 10:15 PM
Well, I used a 100 grit sandpaper, then a 220, then I used a 440 to do a wet-sand. These I did in an even circular motion. :) Then I took the 100 grit and wrapped it around a block and went in single strokes across the lettering. Then I took the 100 and used it with just my fingertips and went in single strokes the length of the cover. You have to press pretty hard to keep it going straight and I would advise only pulling toward yourself and turning the whole thing around to go the other direction because pushing is easier to have it go off sideways.
If you want it more of a polished look, use the 3 grits in ascending order & wet sand with the 440. Then follow it with an aluminum or chrome polish a few times and you can also use a buffing wheel with a fine compound to make it shine like hell :thumb:
I think what you have in mind will be sweet. Heres a pic of when I had mine masked with black pinstriping, it's the oposite parts of the ridges, but you get the idea.

Well I'm gonna have to get some more sand paper. I only have 100 and 220 right now. I'm done for the night. It's dark outside and I don't want to clean up the mess this stuff makes inside so I think I'll call it a night. Thanks for the help. :) Hopefully I'll have it finished tomorrow.

If you look in this pic you can see how the lettering is wrapped up (sorta like a present). It took some time, but all I did was use my 1/4 inch pinstriping I got for my tail lights and wrap them in it.
here.. lemme find a better pic..
AlbinoMonkeyRat
06-21-2005, 07:24 PM
oh, so you just masked them off....
smlzalero
06-21-2005, 07:41 PM
yeah, see if this makes sense.. I had bad luck with everything except the pinstriping because it doesn't stick too bad & it stretches nicely. It's still a bitch & I had to use tweezers, lol.

I had to call it an eary day because I have work at 4am tomorrow, so I couldn't do all the polishing today. Also, WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY IT WAS SO HARD TO GET THE THING BACK ON?
Anyway, I just have "stage 1" half-assedly done. I'll pick up the paint tomorrow after work, come home for lunch and get back to work on that thing. :thumb:
smlzalero

It's NOT hard to put back on.... read what I posted for Marie. You have to loosten the pipes up and take the oil cap off for it to be easy.
AlbinoMonkeyRat
06-22-2005, 06:42 PM
can you point to which nuts/bolts you loosened for the pipes? nothing worked with the pipes for me. :glare:

Then you can pull the pipe toward the driver's side while putting it back in. It just helps to get the plug under there.
Here's my finished product :beerchug:

NP :)
You're not doing flat/solid red are you? I think you should go with a darker red if red at all. Maybe like I suggested for Marie.
AlbinoMonkeyRat
06-22-2005, 08:35 PM
well, a dark red would go very well with my color scheme. And I am keeping the colors to a minimum. Gonna be mostly metal and black under the hood. :)
edit: I do have a CAI on the way. Should be arriving on the 28th. I'm hoping that it fits with the way the piping is bent....
