View Full Version : Backlit neon side mirrors.

I finally did it, and I like it. $30 for a pair of 4" blue neon tubes, and I put them in behind each side mirror, hoping for a nice glow in the gap around the mirrors. It's a nice effect, not very bold, probabaly be nicer with a lighter colored mirror housing (white, grey...). No pix yet (gotta borrow a camera now that mine is gone), it seems like nobody else has tried this. EZ to do on a non-power mirror set up.
UPDATE: Pix now available, scroll down!

How did you go about doing it. How much harder would it be on a power mirror set up?

I ran wires from the light in the cubby hole under the climate controls, then under the dash and out thru the fuse panels on either side. Then ran it under the rubber molding, over to the door, behind the door panel and thru the hole behind the plastic panels which cover the mirror mountings. There are holes there going out into the mirror housing. I put a cable tie with a screw hole around the neon tube and used an existing screw in the mirror housing to secure the light. Feeding the wires thru should be just as easy on power mirrors, mounting the lights is the tuff part. On my driver's side mirror for example, I just put the light in and let it hang inside the housing. There's not much room for it to move around, it can't fall out, but I'd still like to be able to remove the mirror so that I can screw it into place like I was able to do on the passenger side mirror.

So is there a way to remove the actual mirror so in case i want to paint the housing so it reflects better or if I want to secure both lights. If anyone knows how to do it I'd like to know because i wouldnt like it just laying in there. I have a book that tells me how to disassemble the car almost anywhere but it doesnt help me with the removal of the mirror

Here are the pix, I have a helluva time taking clear pix of my lights at night, but this should give you a good indication of how it looks. The light actually glows thru the mirror in a couple of spots. I blacked out most of the mirror's reflection in the pix where I was in a somewhat lit area so you could get a clearer look, but I left the glow thru parts visible. Lemme know what you think.

haha nice.. lol An OLD post... I was wondering why I couldn't see the pictures... I think if you want a better glow... paint the inside of the mirror housing either white, or some reflective color... that would help...

The HVAC knob covers just peeled off, then I painted them blue. For now I have cathodes for the white lighting, but I'm transitioning them to Oznium LED strips (brighter, nicer white, easier install, uber low power use).

Check out the new LED strip dome light. Rediculously bright! 24 LEDs vs my previous 8 is, well, triple the brightness. Took a max of 2 mins to install once I soldered on a pair of mini aligator clips (which took 5 mins).
www.oznium.com (http://www.oznium.com) is all you need to glow.

YEa I really like the dome light! My leds are sitting in the package still hopefully when I have free time I will be able to start to work on them. But right now school is my life.
