Air Bag Removal

Wassup guys, Well im on to my new project. I want to mold a lcd screen into the dash where the air bag is. Im just not to sure how to remove the panel and air bag without setting it of in my face. Any advice would be great. Thanx

I know you aren't looking for opinions, but seriously, don't. Not only does it look stupid, but your passenger won't be too happy when they end up eating lcd and fiberglass instead of airbag. Maybe stupid is harsh. I just think there are places that a screen fits in a lot better, you don't have to make it stick out like that.

If I were doing that, I'd look for the airbag fuse, pull it, then very carefully pry off the cover (with my face away from it).

the cover is attached to the actual airbag, it's spot welded on i believe. i was actually going to do this(my car is obviously not a daily driver tho) BUT it was going to be able to sort of pivot back or whatever so when down it looked like the airbag was still there. Quite a bit more work, but worth it imo

I thought of doing something like sound_xtreme said, but i was thinking of just getting mine to open slowly, and keep my PS2 in there instead. Someone said it may be illegal to tamper with the safety devices in your vehicle, so i just pulled mine and recovered it instead. To get it out you have to remove the 4?or6? screws holding your glove box in. it just falls out, and underneath the dash you'll see 2 10mm nuts holding the airbag in, undo these and it just lifts out of your dash. You should prolly pull the fuse before doing it, but i just detached the power and ground wires from the battery instead. Why not just put a flipdown one in the roofliner, i put an easy how to up when i did mine, or the visor ones?

Before you do any of that, disconnect your battery, and yes, remove the fuse. The fuse so much wont cause the bag to go off, but it doesn't hurt.

Both turtles ride and Eh nigma are right about having to disconnect the battery cable and pulling the fuse out, but remember that after you pull the fuse and cable to wait a couple minutes before you start working on it cuz alot of systems have an individual power supply to deploy it incase power is lost during a crash, I can vouch for this the first time I removed and airbag was three years ago on my freinds truck and lets just say that i removed the fuse and cable but didn't wait long enough and i ended up buying him a new 500 dollar airbag.

If it was my car, I would seriously pass on this idea. Besides the fact of the appearance, I just feel that the owner of a vehicle is responsible for the well being of every individual that my accompany them. I know that I would have a hard time dealing with a loved ones injury that may have been avoided. If you would still like to proceed, you need to do two things. Canada, I think you live in Canada, has a law about safety bags. It is legal for a individual to deactivate the passenger side air bag but a form must be submitted to the following link. http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/tp/tp13178/form_e.htm
You should also consult your insurance agent. If a passenger were to be injured in the vehicle without the airbag they could take action. By contacting your agent you will be ensuring that the insurance cannot refuse payment on the grounds of negligence. As long as you have completed the form and received a written permission for removal the insurance cannot penalize you.

Do what ya want man, i personally think it looks good and different. Different is always good ecspecially with an alero. Anyways for the part about worrying about the safety and wellbeing of the passengers, if they dont feel safe in your car then tell them not to get in, and remeber aleros do come with seatbelts :thumb:

:emotlol: yeah, I fill out that form every time I was working around them...

In mon Auto... I've removed the driver side airbag, and am contemplating the pass. as well... 6 pt. harness seats, may be a bit of overkill, but I'm weighing out the pros' and cons of the bag being there.

I know how much movement I can get in those harnesses... done right, things will be fine... but then again, not every pass. will know how to use them right... enter the risk factor I hate sooooo much.

About the screen though, no... I'm agreeing with the above opinions. Although it's a unique idea, it's a bit out of place. BUT... it's my opinion right... if I listened to people's opinions on what I shouldn't do with an Alero... haha... yeah, let's say it wouldn't be lookin how it is today *looks outside... ouch*... if you wanna do it, give'er...

cant you put something over it so you can keep the bag and it flips back when the airbag goes off.

got to watch doing it that way... speed of the air bag may just snap the hinge on the lcd and push it in to the persons face .. i wouldnt do it ... or casue more damage then you want not essentally to the car either

i know i'm late on this, but it's illegal to remove any safety device in a car...i thought of doin this last yar, and when i started talkin to my guy for the screen, he told me not to do it and blah blah blah..i'm happy i didn't anyways...
