Took the 'ho into the GM shop t'day... they told me there was a recall on the Alero, for computer reprogramming... I told them to hold off (as they didn't know what exactly was being upgraded). Anyone have any idea what this will effect?

what year and engine do you have?

02, 2.2L Ecotec...

I tried doing a google search on the recall, but nothing... I think I'm gonna look up the number to GM and ask myself... I'll keep y'all posted.

I hate GM's elevator music...

Its a general service package for the computer... seems no one really new what it did specifically - no surprise - so I kept calling around GM... lots of "hold please"... came up with this...

a.varify the calibration systems on the vehicle
b.installing new powertrain control module

Anyone got any opinions on this?

hmmmmm, no idea........i wonder what a "powertrain controll module" is exactly

Let them do it. It's just an update to the calibration. You'll get a little better economy and be less likely to break your trans, basically.

The PCM is the brain that tells the powertrain what to do. It has the engine and trans cal in it, among other algorithms.

More info... Recall No. 03064, specific to certain serial numbers (vehicles) only... not a gen. recall or engine specific...

If it's the one I think it is, PM Overdrive75 and he'll tell you exactly what it is since he's, well, involved. He'll be back in town tomorrow.

There is a PCM update for a stall/hesitation/stumble at idle that effects my 04 and my friend's 03 (ecotec only) - I just had it in last week for this issue and they updated the PCM and replaced the IAT with an "updated" one that is supposed to prevent this problem.

So far, so good :)

Just a little FYI, I've NEVER had a computer reflash make a car run worse - usually it's quite the opposite, the car runs better then it was new. GM knows what they are doing :) They can also downgrade it too, incase you ever got a flash that was a problem.

So there's no reason for concern?

I just don't like people tinkering with my car when I don't know what exactly is being done it it. Know what I mean?

But, from the sounds of things, I'll bring it into the shop tomorrow for the update... Thanks all.

Were you having issues with the IAT sensor or did they just replace it along with doing the reflash?

It's certain vehicles only... it's not engine specific, or the year of manufacturing... it's by serial numbers (at least that's how it was explained to me).

Actually it is just the Ecotec.
