stupid question...YES!!!, you can go with just a normal black tint or theres other options like reflective tint, like i have on my car, click on my link in my sig to check it

I can't tell if the black would go good with that shade of blue.

What exactly is reflective tint? In some pics it looks black, in some silver.

99blackalero
01-28-2004, 02:52 PM
thats the beauty of it, when its really sunny it will almost look like a mirror, and when its not as dark it'll be black, so with this tint you get two in one pretty much, and mine are heat and UV reflective so it doesnt heat up as much as conventional tint

OpalaAlero
01-28-2004, 02:55 PM
How much did that cost?

Naich
01-28-2004, 02:55 PM
I'd just get black... it never goes out of style. Problem with mirror tint is that in a month it will probably be out of style again.

Get 20% all round, and it would look great.

OpalaAlero
01-28-2004, 02:58 PM
All around...does that include the windshiled also? I thought having the windshield tinted was super illegal.

99blackalero
01-28-2004, 03:12 PM
all around as in the windows, it is illegal to tint the windshield

Naich
01-28-2004, 03:12 PM
no never ever tint the windshield lol.... i meant all 4 doors and the rear

OpalaAlero
01-28-2004, 03:13 PM
Ok. Is 20% illegal? I'm not too concerned with it, just wondering.

Check your state regs cause every state is different on the % of tint they will allow.

OpalaAlero
01-28-2004, 03:31 PM
Visor.................6"

Front doors............72%

Rear doors..........72%

Back window.........any

So back window, you can't have any but I will anyway. But what does it mean by visor?

Cyber Knight
01-28-2004, 03:37 PM
Hmmm, those ratings sound backwards to me. It usually rated in what percentage of light will penetrate thru, yours sounds like what percentage of light will be blocked so on your:

front and rear doors - you can use tint that will block up to 72% of the light

back window you can block as much light as you like, paint it black if you want.

As for the visor, I believe that means that, from the top of your windshield, you can apply tint no taller than 6".

OpalaAlero
01-28-2004, 03:40 PM
So that would make front and rears 28%?

I'll stick with the 20.

Naich
01-28-2004, 03:52 PM
no nono....

The ratings are correct.... those mean:

Back window- you can use anything (including limo tint)
Side windows- you can only use 72% (which is like almost clear)
visor- this is the piece that goes on the front windshield where you can put a banner (like the aleromod.com ones we're making) on the top of the windsheld.

In NJ, we're allowed to have any on the rear, 20 on the back doors, nothing on the front doors or windsheld.

I've been pulled over for it 3 times (all within a month of eachother) and given 1 ticket (OUT OF STATE WHICH IS BS, in PA on the way into carlisle).

OpalaAlero
01-28-2004, 03:53 PM
How much was the ticket for?

And how much of a tint do you have?

Silentalero
01-28-2004, 03:58 PM
you mean tickets.... lol

72% light penetration?!?! Ugh, save your money. Quite a variance in laws across the states and provinces.

I'm still gunna get 20% all around.

30 is lighter than 20. I'd go to a tint shop and have a look if you're not sure. Here in MI, it's 35, which is hardly anything. Plus, our windows are already slightly greenish tinted, so take that into considerationg if you're trying to stay legal. They'll measure total light penetration, so it ends up being less than the tint is. But at 72%, you're illegal with pretty much anything, so do whatever you want, and ride with your windows down. ;)

Get the darkest shade that Ziebart will give you and go through them...i did and you also get a warranty with it. I've got warned about it and that's it...either I tell the 5-0 that I bought the car like that or that I enter the car in car shows, in which I do.

My mom has dark tint like I do on her 1969 Dodge Charger, which she enters in car shows...she gets pulled over by 5-0 and that's what she tells them.

Another thing is, you can get a doctor's note that says that your eyes need tint on your vehicle when driving...one of my friends does and 5-0 can't say poop about it.

01-28-2004, 07:19 PM
^^^^^^^She has a good point, u can just say u bought the car like that, and u'll prolly get a warning, but sometimes that dosent always work. Im not sure where ur from, and what kinda laws u have, but in IL it's illeagle to have ANY tint on the front doors. I have 30% on the front(or 30, I cant remember).
But yea, DEFF tint out that ride....it'll look tight. Go with black. Look into the people who will be doin it too, cause there are a lotta guys out there that use cheap poop that fades to purpleish blue really fast....

Yeah, Oldsmopimp (awesome name, btw) is right. Definitely check out the place. The guys that do in in their garage don't sit well with me. They may have years of experience and be the best there is, but it's so hard to know. I did a lot of research about it and I found out this:

If you ask about a warranty, everyone will tell you that there is a warranty. But they're talking about a manufacturer's warranty on the tint. If you go buy tint from Wal-Mart, it's got a warranty too...so what? If you go to a place like Ziebart or as I say, somewhere that's got a tall, lit-up sign on a steel pole in front of the place. I'm kinda kidding, kinda not. If a place spends the money to buy those signs (they're pretty expensive) they're going to be there for a while. Preferable a place that's a chain...hopefully nationally if not regionally. Some place like Ziebart. Search the web to find some in your area.

Here's the important part (to me, at least). Get "metallized" tint. This does not mean metallic or mirrored. Cheaper tint uses dyed polyester. This is fine, but after a bit of time and a bit of sun, the dye starts to break down and turns purple. Metallized tint has metal in the tint somehow (not sure of the process) but the metal makes the dye MUCH more stable--it shouldn't turn purple for years. You'll pay for it, though. I found a place around here on the east side of Chicago (yes, there is one, and no...it's not the lake :P ) and he said he'd do the car for $40 (but not metallized tint). Then he mentioned something about his location and an alley. So yeah...no for that place. Ziebart said that with their "high performance package" there's warranty on the LABOR. That's $180 for a 2-door. So the tint is the good stuff, with manufacturer's warranty, and the labor is warrantied too...by a place that I'd expect to be there for some time. So if you have the tint for 3 months and there are bubbles, you take it back and they fix it...that's for me!

Oh yeah, I see you have a 4-door. All the top-notch places I called quoted a price $20 more for a 4-door than the 2-door. Good luck!

Those rating sound like the amount of light you BLOCK, so 72% would be 28% tint.

20% is good, and you cannot get a ticket for tint if you're out of state.

I have 15% on my car but 30% is the limit. However, Philly cops have things to do

I think i'll get them done at a local electronic store where I had my deck installed. They start tinting again around March/

Alerogrl thats how u get out of those tickets. Cuz girl your tints are limo tint all the way around. Excuses will only get u soo far till one day u get a cop who's not going to buy it and will no every trick in the book. Or if u get pulled over u can give the cop a guilt trip for pulling u over for tinted windows, and not doing something more constructive.

Purple and Black.....U hit the nail on the head....... "metallic" tint, is what my guy told me he used....He said due to the make up of the tint, it WILL NOT fade....I dont really belive that tho....cuz I think ALL tint fades after years in the hot sun. But, I got mine tinted in september of '01, and the tint still loox like it did the day I had it done. I payed 250 bonez and I got all the windows done exept for the winshield. The guy that did it for me works out of a place close to where I live, NW of chi. I think he is one of the best around...when I get ahold of a digi-camera, i'll take pix to show off his skill.
So yeah....the "metalized", or "metallic" tint is deffinatly the best.
My 95' Taurus was tinted at Midwest Glass Tinters in Arlignton Heights IL, and that poop faded right away, BUT they do have a lifetime warrenty on fadding and I have brought it back there three times already. They replaced the tint with no hassle, but I DONT reccomend this place to any of you in the Chi area. so bottom line: If u plan on keepin the alero for a long time, get the tint done right.

I think you should call around to some tint places or even look at some cars and ask the owner where they got it done at. I know tint laws seem to change every year. Some places can do your back window limo, your quarter windows limo and the eyebrow at the top of your front windshield limo. That's what I have on mine and mine is mirrored but not a tacky look like your actually looking at a mirror. Mine is dark when it's cloudy or an ugly day and it has a slight mirror look during the day. I think your car would look good with the dark and not mirrored. I suggest looking at other peoples tint because you may go somewhere and a year down the road it starts to turn purple. Good Luck

I also heard that the Platinum tint or mirrored tint keeps more of the sun out then regular tint. Check state laws first. No use in paying money to the courts if you don't have to.

I re-read my post and the point wasn't too clear to me, and I wrote it...just wanted to clarify to be sure... B)

Regular black tint can be either regular dyed polyester (cheaper, but turns purple quicker) or metallized (still looks just plain dark, but lasts longer).

Metallic or mirrored tint is something else, but those tints will always be metallized.

So you can get metallized tint and it'll look like regular tint but better quality -- doesn't have to be mirrored or metallic-looking...

Here in BC, when i tint it'll be 5% (95% blocked) the back 3 windows will be tinted...
the Basic law pritty much everywhere is no tint ahead of the drivers shoulder...
Behind there usually the Po dont care... at least here.. even a SLIGHT tint (30%) or so is sometimes tolerated on the front doors...
I dont know about down there.. but up here if you have tint on the drivers or front doors the pigs will just scatch it off partially with their key... and then give you a inspection order... (just to show them that you have taken it off)
no one i know has gotten a ticket for it...

Opala, Opala, Opala....

You seem absolutely clueless on this whole tint thing. It's really not a big deal.

1. The lower the percentage the darker the tint. I have % premiun limo on my back windows...(that means only 5% of light passes thru the windows), and I have 15% on the front.
2. In Michigan, any percentage is allowed on the back window and rear side windows...however you are only allowed a 4" strip on the front side windows and windshield. As you can see...I really stayed true to that law HA. I have gotten 1 ticket for $75 only because they pulled me over for neon underbodies originally.
Normally, you wont be ticketed for tint unless the cops get you for something else.

So, don't stress over this....it shouldnt be a difficult decision.

I just want to say i hate the window tint laws. I think in illinois, now i could be wrong you can have tints on the back windows and the back sides but the driver and passenger side has to be visible or have no tints. NOw to me that s gonna gonna look friggen stupid. Especially on a 2 door alero, cuz the back windows on the side are small. And to just drive around and see black tints in the back and the back windown and these two large windows not tinted...well the state of illinois can suck on my left tit. Morons. Hmm but blueeyes that relfective or plantiumn tint, sounds like it would be a cool idea to have that on the driver and passenger side and have the back and back window dark black. Poopy laws and those numbnuts that ruin it for everyone else.
