Hello All... Not sure if this is in the right area... But i am looking to put in some sort of aftermarket steering wheel... I hate the stock aleros... Are there any wheels available??? And another thing... My shift knob broke and am also looking for an aftermarket shift knob for an automatic and was curious as to where to find one that fits... thanks!!!

Well for the steering wheel you can get almost any wheel that you want that has thesix screw mounthing method but you will have to get a addaptor, I got mine from andy's, but you will also lose your cruise control so you will either have to rewire it somewere else or just live without it. But i have no idea if their are any aftermarket wheels that will mount like stock, pretty sure there isn't.
As for shifter the only ones that will be differant but will fit and work like stock is one from a sunfire or grand am, aftermarkets tend to be a little more difficult to mount and get to work right, their are some people on here who have some that seem to work great for them so try the search featcher to see if you can find some pics of them or where they got theirs.

oh i got my shift knob from jcwhitney.com.
my stock one broke on me like.. 3 times i think? lol happened so much.. well i got sick of buying new ones and they have some kinda cheap ones at jcwhitney. I got the one with the dual finishes or w/e and the top button. you have to install it just right tho; if its putting pressure on the button then it wont let you take the key out, assuming its in gear or something, and if its not far enough it wont shift. took me like... 10 minutes =/ it has been good for the month or so i have had it.
here are their knobs..

mine is the "AUTOTECNICA 2-TONE CUSTOMIZED SHIFT KNOB"
oh andi wouldnt recommend changing out your steering wheel... air bags, cruise buttons lost.. bla blah. but do what you want.

Yea just about any steering wheel will work with the adaptor andy sells, i think its a momo addaptor, as long as the wheel mounts with six screws around the center point

I agree, I changed my steering wheel but it also wasn't a problem in my state for me to do so, also i new how to disable the airbag so it wouldn't eject well i was working, which you deffinatly need to do if you decide to do this, also i relocated my cruise control.
Its a nice mod and can really give your interiour a differant look just make sure you want that change and are ok with either losing/relocating your cruse and with loosing your airbags.

If you change it the only adapter hub that is made for our car is a momo. They use a six bolt pattern but if you want a five bolt pattern like a grant steering wheel you can get an adapter plate for that hub that goes from a six to a five, or get creative with a drill and tap.

no prob, just make sure that if you do put on a new wheel you won't have any problems with the cops if you get pulled over, i know that in north dakota the cops really dont care but im not sure about anywere else.

I actually like my crusie controls were i have moved them, they are right inbetween the window controls and the mirror controls on my drivers side door, plus i love having a aftermarket wheel it really changes the look of the interiour and gets ride of the bulky stock wheel.

When it comes to the cruise control and air bag, it's a question you have to ask yourself... do you want to sacrifice the buttons being a fingers reach away? Do you want to remove an airbag that could give you added safety?
I am moving my buttons to a panel I'm making between the front seats (as I usually drive with one hand on the wheel anyway).
As for the airbag, I wanted to get rid of the bag asap. It's personal pref., as far as I can see myself, using an airbag, being in the accident I was in, it was of no use (didn't even deploy).
I was working on (and will still continue) to make my wheel removable. But not only for the NASCAR style... more of making a long story short, a friend of mine recieving serious burns because he was trapped by his wheel in an accident was enough motivation to give me the option of pulling off the wheel. To me, that in itself was more than enough added safety to get rid of the bag.
Bottom line, if you're into custom looks for a car you're working on, there is never any limit (including the steering wheel). But, as you'll be using this part constantly, get one you're comfortable with, one you like the look of, and mainly, one that works for you. It's no real headache to keep the buttons on any wheel you pick (read: custom cruise control setup).
Either way, something like a steering wheel, as simple as it may be, is something you shouldn't overlook or take too lightly (not too seriously either though).

When ya remove the airbag, please tell your insurance company. Cuz if you get into a wreck, and you or someone gets hurt while insurance dont know that you took off your airbag, that will be a big problem. Then they might not cover it.
Insurance might be a little bit more higher without airbags, But i'd let them know first, before ya drive. When i got into my hydroplane accident (no other cars involved, just me and the curb median) the first thing my insurance company said was "did the airbags go off?"

Yea I have been in two crashes with my alero, neither my fault, and the airbag never deployed once. Both were front end impacts at 45 and 35 - 40 MPH.

My accident had myself involved with 4 other vehicles: Side impact (T-boned) that threw my car into three other parked cars, all impacting in the front... no airbag deployment there...

Yea i don't know y the airbag wont go off in a crash, not that im complaining it woulda been a pain to clean up and replace.
