View Full Version : Advice On Head Unit

As recently posted in the bazaar, I had my car broken into and my head unit/trim piece stolen. My brother has a JVC KD-LHX500 that he said he would sell me for $200. If I remember right, I paid $230 or so for my Eclipse CD5425 - it's listed for $269 on cartoys.com right now - it would cost more to get the lowend Eclipse than this JVC, which I think is one of their highend ones. So, my question is... should I get the JVC? I've always had the notion that JVC was the "Walmart" brand audio stuff, but this particular one seems like it's pretty nice - 5V preamp, touchscreen, all that stuff.
Thanks,
Collin

Well then - guess I was misinformed about JVC then - heh. I could probably get it a little bit cheaper, but this is also going to help out my brother who needs some cash.
Thanks everybody for the input.

I am curious. Judging by the price of your 5425, you bought it at a authorized retailer. Did you have them instal the unit? If so, then eclipse will replace any stollen HU.

Yes, I had Car Toys install the head unit - I called them first off and the guy I talked to on the phone said that all he had was a proof of purchase, and that if I had sent off the registration card thing then I could call Eclipse about it - I called the number off of the Eclipse website a couple of times, but every time I did it said their offices were closed. I'm not sure if I'm calling at weird times or if I have a wrong number or what, and I'm also not sure if I sent in the registration card unfortunately. Anybody know if indeed you have to have sent in the registration card to get it replaced?
Thanks,
Collin

Dangit, I spoke too soon - I just went and grabbed the box out of my closet - there's the Warranty Registration card sitting there completely untouched. Can I still fill it out and send it in after the fact or am I out of luck?

they are on CA time so you need to call in the afternoon to get them. I have to call like at 4pm in the afternoon to get them. I'd stick with Eclipse. JVC has decent HUs and features but the reliability has been a little up and down, here and there. I'd stick with Eclipse. The 54 series is still better than the JVC. And if you stepped up to the 84 series well, no comparison.

You may need the serial number off of the deck...if you didn't write it down anywhere...then I think your poop out of luck.

Your serial number can be brought up on your deck display. Your manual should say how. I have the 8455 so the proceedure would be different. However, you are probably screwed about the warranty. Just as it states on your registration card, it must be mailed in to activate the extended warranty with a signature from your instal shop. Without the card you only have a one year warranty with no theft protection. If you have the receipt, I would contact eclipse and see if you can mail it to them for proof. As long as it shows that the shop installed the deck withing 30 days of purchase you may be good. Add the shops phone number and contact info so that they can back you on the purchase. In fact, you might even try calling them from the shop so that all of you can talk at the same time. Good luck on getting your warranty activated. If they honor it, you willl get a free deck.

Talked to Eclipse - lady I talked to said that all I need to do is call back with the:
1. Proof of purchase (receipt, which I have)
2. Proof of installation (on above receipt from Car Toys)
3. Serial number (on the box and on the warranty registration card)
4. Police report (will get it tomorrow - records was closed Friday for Veteren's Day)
So it seems like maybe things will work out after all. *crosses fingers*
If they do replace it, I know one thing - I'm sure as heck never going to use anybody other than Eclipse... that's simply amazing for a company to do that.
Cheers,
Collin

I would like to blame my response on :alcoholic: , unfortunately it was just stupidity. Good luck with the deck. I doubt you will have any problems since eclpse already confirmed it for you. I had to send in my first deck for repair earlier this year. Good concidering I have been using all eclipse since 97. They were great. It took about 15 minutes confirming my registration ( I work for eclipse so they auto register the units) but then it was just a matter of packing it up and mailing out. The lady even gave me a brand new deck with 2nd day air and priority processing. In my opinion, I would take this service over a detachable face anyday.
