Turtle Back Zoo now recruiting Docent Volunteers

Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ is now recruiting volunteers to participate in the Zoo’s docent program.

While a love of animals draws many volunteers to Turtle Back Zoo, docents are not directly involved with the handling and care of the Zoo's animals. Docents are one of the most visible members of our Zoo community and their main goal is to provide the Zoo guests with a quality, educational and enriching experience while they are here. Turtle Back Zoo docents act as tour guides, give educational talks, and are stationed throughout the Zoo to provide information to visitors about the Zoo and its animal collections. Docents commit to volunteer a minimum of 70 hours per year through a set schedule of 4-hour shifts, spending a majority of their time interacting with zoo visitors. Both weekday and weekend docents are needed.

Interested volunteers do not need a background in biology, zoology or any animal sciences to become a docent. New docents must be at least 18 years old and complete a 6-week training course instructed by experienced TBZ Docent staff. The course is held on successive Saturdays in February and March on Zoo grounds. A fee of $15 covers training materials and handouts.

Anyone interested should PM me (Daytona) for more info.
