So who else got this crappy recall fixed? this is what they did to my keys. I was totally expecting them to address the security issue, but nope. just another cheap patch.

Lol, they keep bugging me to get mine done. I guess I better for liability reasons...

correct. If anything were to ever happen insurance might not cover and what not if you dont have it fixed. It is a cheap patch, I only got one of mine done but its recorded its done at least. Its just the plastic insert and two small ring loops.

You guys can always buy the normal keys after the recall is done online if that's why you guys are avoiding the recall.

I've just been busy with school and lazy. Taking 6 courses this semester..

Papa Rad17 03-19-2015 11:33 AM

Tell me about it. I'm taking 24 credit hours myself. 8 classes

number53alero 03-19-2015 04:08 PM

Good luck, it's tough but worth it. After this semester I'll be 5 classes from graduating with a BS in Computer Information technology and minors in Information Security and Business informatics.

AleroB888 03-19-2015 04:21 PM

Will they make new keys for us, too?

Heh, I have 89 semester-hours but it's too late to finish up now :p

Papa Rad17 03-19-2015 11:02 PM

I dont know about keys. I had ordered blanks for like $5 on ebay and walmart cut them for free.

jokerl90 03-21-2015 11:23 AM

The only keys I have are flat metal ones that a locksmith made before I bought the car, not sure this "fix" would even work on them. Also would cost me between 150 or 250 dollars from taking off work for a day.
If they were going to really fix the problem by replacing the defective parts, I would consider it worth it.

Papa Rad17 03-21-2015 05:20 PM

Will not work with those. ^ Only for a factory key.

black 03-22-2015 03:49 PM

forget the lame patch nonfix, send me $25.

zzyzzx 03-23-2015 11:30 AM

So if I really want to get this done , and I am not sure that I do, I can just show up to the dealer with my keys and the card and they will do the "fix" while I wait? I mean, if I 'm in the middle of a bicycle ride, I might stop by a dealer, but I would waste gas on a fix like this.

03Alerosil 03-24-2015 05:41 PM

I had it done just so I didn't have to worry about the insurance shit. Then 4 months later my lock cylinder locked up and I had to replace the lock cylinder and switch. At least now the lame ass key is easy to tell apart from the ignition key

If I end up with an alero for my 4dr thats how I was going to tell them apart

kbubb91 09-29-2015 06:38 PM

keep your key ring under 24oz and your fine, its people with dumb shit like a pikachu toy the size of a thumb or a belt buckle on a key ring

kadawg13 10-01-2015 11:18 PM

all I have is the ring, a house key, and a lightweight carabiner on my ignition key. and most always leave it in the ignition. I keep my door fob and other keys clipped to a belt loop.

jokerl90 10-02-2015 07:35 PM

I have a key with the plastic on it I use for the ignition when driving. I keep it in my watch pocket when not in use. I keep a all metal key that's on a key ring with other keys in case I lose the single key or lock myself out of the car.

I just called a local dealer, since I was going to go biking past a dealer this weekend. I was thinking all I needed was the car keys and the recall notice, but they said that if I want it done, I have to bring in the whole car. I'm not going to do that, when they only need the key. The excuse given was to verify the VIN, , the tag, and mileage. The VIN is on the recall notice. In so far as the tags and mileage, I don't see why they need that, and it's really none of their business.

That seems like a waste of time for you to have to take the entire car when they know its just the keys that need replaced. specially if you have the recall letter. Darn GM and their logic.

Redog 10-27-2015 08:45 PM

Got my keys "fixed" last week. Asked about the tumbler and they said my car wasn't on the tumbler list, I told them I replaced the tumbler back in 2006 when my Alero stumbled and stalled at 60 mph.

Idk:huh:

If I happen to be near a GM dealer anyway and thy for some reason want to look at the car to verify the VIN and mileage, I'd be OK with that, but they are not taking the car into a service bay to potentially eff it up.

zzyzzx 05-13-2022 08:02 PM

I replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch and consider this to be a permanent fix.
