2001 Alero V6
90,000 miles Everything stock with the exception of K&N air Filter. Nothing major about 45k - new front rotors, pads (back was hardly worn .... hmmm) 65k - blower motor resistor. (had an extended warrenty to 70k) While it was in they "said" they found a major coolant leak but probably just a ploy to rip the warranty company off. Rotors warped again in front and I don't consider myself a constant breaker. LOT's of highway driving! I have seen my mileage drop off to about 23-24 mpg. It was anywhere from 27-28mpg. I do keep track of my mpg in a book. I will try and figure out where I lost the mileage and when. I did replace the spark plugs at about 50k miles with titanium tiped ones. Didn't help or hurt mileage. May need to replce those again..... |

2002 3.4l v6
Bought in 02 with 28,000 miles Problems: 40,000 Left tie rod 42,000 Right tie rod 50,000 Water pump 52,000 Right wheel bearing 52,500 Left wheel bearing 54,000 Right wheel bearing again :pissed: Currently: 80,000 just now replacing pads and rotors I can't really complain (aside from the damn bearings) No engine trouble so far. I drive about 50 miles a day (work) so really not bad considering the abuse I put her through. I have talked to several gm techs in my area and all say that alero is know for going through bearings like every 2k miles. YIKES  Can anyone else relate to this? |
oops......12kmiles not 2k.. :P
|
2000 3.4 v6
70k the only thing so far that is remotly bad is that the power steering fluid line broke..... |
I bought my 1999 Alero in 2002 with 35,000 miles. Here is the list of problems, thus far:
45,000 miles - Cylinder number 3 misfired 500,000 times, so replaced all spark plugs and wires..still has not solved the problem 47,000 miles - Replaced Right HUB Sensor 53,000 miles - Replaced Driver's Side Tailight 55,000 miles - Replaced Rear Rotors and Pads 58,000 miles - Need to Replace Front Rotors and Pads, Cruise Control Switch is not working, Service Vehicle Light is Coming on due to ALC does not work..need to get it replaced. I actually like my Automatic Light Control..although I have read many posts where people could do without it. Need to replace I think the Left HUB Sensor, Low Trac Light comes on when backing up. I would get rid of her, but I love her too much to do that. My dad says I need to cut the sunroof off and then replace everything else. :) |
Ok... 2000 3.4
bought it with 22K miles 39K miles Accident - all cosmetic damage to front passanger side and hood. 44K miles Replaced Right side Hub 45K miles Replaced Right side tie rod 67K miles Replaced most of coolant system due to 4 seperate leaks now has 73K miles.. Only other stuff I've done is brakes/rotors about every 6K miles (front only) rear still stock... Also I'm on my 3rd set of tires! |

2002 Coupe with 2.2 ecotec
100 km, noticed misaligned roof lining. There was a gap of about 1 inch between the roof and the liner. Dealer fixed ofcourse with trying to give me a run around. He said that the guys that put in the alarm did it. 1000 km, doors becomed misaligned. They would not even close. Dealer fixed it, but the moron mechanic forgot to put in one part back it. They had to call be back in. 2000 km, doors misaligned again, dealer fixed again, this time all the part were put in, and they are good so far. 6000 km, rotors gone. Dealers excuse is that my pads are almost worn out. I go home check the pads they are almost still new. Go back bitch a bit and they machined the rotors. 10,000 km, rotors gone again. I go back to the dealer and they replaced the rotors. 13,000 km, security light comes on and stays on for a bit then disapears. I thing it is related to my compustart alarm/starter/pager. They had to put in some sort of a GM passlock interface so that the alarm could operate properly. I think that maybe just maybe that part is going. 20,000 km, rotors gone again. Got some from RSM racing (slotted). Was impresed at first, looked god, and braked pretty good, did not last to long. 45,000 km, replaced the rotors with Canadia tire The cheap kind. 59,000 km, front hub gone, dealer replaced the wrong side, I went back and they replaced the other side. My warrantly expires at 60,000 so I got really lucky. At first they would not hear about it. 60,000 km, replaced rotors with Canadian tire (heavy duty). 75,000 km, traction light, ABS light, and trac off light comes off. Turns out that sensor in the hub is no good. Need to replace the whole unit 7 bills gone. currently 80,000 km, needed items: -rotors -rust showing up on the window panes. It is the kind that goes from inside out??? I though GM has good steel? -rust showing up under the hood. -oil filter cup is worn out because when they replace the oil they torque it to much and it gets worn out. -alarm does not work???, frequent security light. I bet that they are somehow related. -passenger speaker sometimes works, sometimes it does not. I have a Alpine unit pretty good one, and I find it hard to believe that this would be causing this problem. I use al the proper harnesses to intergrate this stereo. I really think I got a lemon. I am looking around for a 2001 or 2002 mustang GT convertible or not because this car has been nothing but trouble. I love the way it looks, I love the way it handles, but I am giving up the fight. NO MORE GM for ME. ...Sorry guys. |

41,278 front axle broke |
2001 Alero 2.4L -- 116,178 miles. Bought brand new in May 2001. No engine mechanical problems. Well, it eats a quart of oil every 3,000 since first oil change at 3,000. Switched to Mobil 1. Change the oil every 6,000, filter every 3,000. Clutch still original(knock on wood). Rear brakes still original.
30,000 Steering developed the "noise" fluid disappearing, changed out the fluid with STP power steering fluid. Hasn't lost a drop since and once a year I change out the fluid. 60,000 first set of brake pads 75,000 first set of plugs 90,000 left front hub went out, 100,000 the ignition cylinder security feature that senses the key went out. No start condition. You have to wait 10 minutes with key on to bypass. 103,000 the ABS and TRAC OFF light came on when backing up. Right front Wheel sensor, fixed itself. Third set of tires. Michelin HydroEdge-should last rest of the life of car(85,000 mile warranty) has aftermarket muffler, 62mm TB from RSM, B&M shifter, WAI from AEM, purchased from APOC(POS, Rubber elbow rotted out after 10,000 miles(4 months)) purchased a Samco replacement , front and soon rear STB from RSM. |

Nah, the stock rotors are crap and this is the second set of rotors. The next set is going be slotted to help get the hot gases out from between the pads and rotor. The rotors now are warped a little. But they don't seem to make that much of a difference until you get up to about 75. Any faster and the problem goes away. any slower and you don't notice. So any faster than 75 and I use the engine to slow down if I can. I drive 75 miles one way to work and it's mostly I-95. Except for the stop and go I don't use my brakes very much especially since I have the manual. Believe me I was shocked. Every time I rotate my tires I check the brakes. I had to put the second set of pads on at 110,000. The first set of rotors did last until the second pad change. However they did shake pretty bad. I'm waiting for my calipers to give out with all the punishment the rotors and myself have put them through.
