I just did this, I bought an alero with a known bad motor because I had a good motor in the one my daughter wrecked, if you have a good clean engine prepped and ready to go in it can be done in a day, I opened the hood at 0630, and was test driving it at 1800 that's alone, but probably not something to expect, I've been turning wrenches for 3 1/2 decades on everything from bikes to jet fighters... The only way to consider going is up, the down would entail the whole subframe dropping, trans & all, and you'd still need a cherry picker to get the engine off that and the new one on it, so just rent one and go up, best advice I can give is that the lower trans to engine Stud comes out of the trans(not just the nut off) with a 7 or 8 mm(sorry don't remember which) wrench

yeah now just to find about 3 people to help, and then it will be done........

Well what can do is sell or trade is for a 2.4l if you want to keep it they way it was...
There is nothing wrong with 3400 other than the LIMG....

Alerojester 12-18-2010 05:39 PM

i would have the whole car, so everything would be there that i would need.... its not a deffinate thing just an idea cause i miss my ho and really wanna see it running again :(

If the front end is in one peice, then drop the front cradel, with struts,motor,trans...
alot faster imho..

If you transmission are different then pull the motor...

Good luck.:scpimp:

i was gonna do the whole craddle and everything BUT im gonna have to do some fixing cause the right front tire is slightly bowed out due to hitting the pole, im thinking it could just be a tierod or hopefully just the rack.... but this is gonna be a fun swap cause i really miss my car......

what all of the wiring harness am i going to need to make this work?????? need to know cause its gonna go under the knife here in a bout a week or less so trying to get it all the info before i dig too far into it.................

At a dealership I'd believe that.

You don't actually have to swap the cradle. The mounts just bolt to it. The engine harness should be modular. You just remove the harness from the PCM and inline connector to the dash harness, the grommet through the firewall, and you may even be able to pull the engine without removing the harness from it. Even if it didn't work that easy, most of the wiring is right on the top.

Alerojester 04-12-2011 01:49 PM

hmmm so most of the 2.4 wiring is the same? cause its gonna be me and my business partner doing the swap in the shop so we're trying to get as much info as phyically possible so we don't run into too much of a problem while doing the swap.............

You need everything:Engine,Mounts,Tranny, both axles, the whole wiring harness back to the computers, both computers, fuel lines, and im sure theres a few little things in forgetting. It would of been alot easier to just drop another ld9 in or even an older 2.3 Ho which has 190hp.

AZFire316 04-13-2011 04:10 PM

Just realize this isnt a simple engine swap, its going to take alot of time as well as patience.

Alerojester 04-13-2011 06:30 PM

well i have the cradle and everything just sitting here waiting to go into it computers, axles, everything im gonna have to change the rack though cause its pretty screwed from the kid hitting the pole but other then that everything is straight and on a side note the motor has roughly 130k miles on it and doesn't knock or anything so I see it as im doing one better for myself and doing all of this or i could pay a buddy to do it for me since he's done all of our engine swaps in our work trucks and it was done in a matter of two days..... im still prolly gonna have questions so i'll continue to ask in this thread so im not making another one thanks for the patience with me ik im kinda a newb and just ask alot of questions but how else am i gonna find out with i need to know.............

Ttop191 04-13-2011 08:59 PM

might as well do a LIMG while you are at it ;)
