Rebuilt Tranny is SLOW

So I got my tranny rebuilt. The mech said it was in horrible shape for 78k the fluid was burnt and smelled horrible, he said the spyder gears got so hott they were welded together and allthe bushings on one side were worn out from burnouts.

Before I beat a 5speed z24 with intake and exhaust, v6 firebird, 305 carb camaro etc. Last night I raced a stock 5 speed cavalier and lost. I got him off the line but then he caught up and flew past me around 50. I know that when your battery is disconected it relearns your driving habits and i've been taking it easy on the new tranny up until i raced it. so if I disconnect the battery and then drive it like hell for a while will it learn to be more aggresive and stay that way or will it go back to being not so agresive if i drive slow more after i give it hell for a while? Basicly does it savethe setting or is it constantly changing based on your driving style? Also what should I do to break my tranny in better, the last one only lasted 78k only 18k of it was from me driving.

Also I'mthinking of getting a tranny cooler maybe a tranny/oil cooler, doesanyone have any suggestions?

heres a thought........stop racing so damn much! either that or learn so how to properly. tons of the guys here have raced like a million times (aka Redog lol) and he hasent complained about tranny problems all that much if any.

also.....your tranny doesnt "learn" and adapt to your driving from when you disconnect the battery, no offence dude, but thats one of the dumbest things ive ever heard. the tranny will do what its built to do, if you want more out of it, gotta lay down some hard cash to get a damn good upgrade or replace it entirely.

If I'm not mistaken the computer "learns" your driving habits or something, I know my dads f150 does and I thought the Aleros did to. It wasn't the racing that killed it, im sure it was the burnouts and donuts, which I don't do anymore. But the car seriously feels like itdoesn't pull as hard now.

ive never heard of that, i know if you drive it hard enough your gonna eff something up, like most things!!

bratch15 03-13-2007 12:40 AM

dont worry man, I have an intake on my 3.4 and I raced my friend with a 5 speed z24 with an intake, exhaust, and short throw shifter and I got killed till about 80 because he shifted too early...

bratch15 03-13-2007 12:41 AM

I dont think your car got slower, its just the second time you raced the z24, that person knew how to shift...

Try disconnecting your battery overnight. Ever time I disconenct my battery, it slips in all gears, and takes weeks to be completely relearn back to normal. Try disconnecting the battery, and then relearning it without any B&M being on.

The second one wasn't a z24 it was a ecotec bone stock and I'd say both drivers know how to shift equally. But what about breaking it in, and also what is the correct rpm to launch at, I've heard that if you launch to high your tranny can get too hot and tear stuff up.

Gr1m 03-13-2007 01:02 AM

doesnt sound like you should be racing :-/

Kanyon 03-13-2007 01:04 AM

Sorry I wasn't born knowing all and apparently no one thinks I should be able to learn. I thought that was the point of the forum, to share info and advice.

pawzbear 03-13-2007 02:27 AM

not on street racing.

cherrington17 03-13-2007 07:42 AM

You computer CAN learn... to an extent. i don't think its going to be noticable though. your gonna have to do some car mods, before the computer differences really hold any measure in the way you race. (and if this isn't at a track, we don't want to hear about it)...but even after heavy engine mods, your gonna want a performance computer upgrade so you can have it PROGRAMMED for the mods. its not sophisticated enough to adapt as much as you think.

if you truely want to be better, get the bigger/badder tranny for our cars. (4t65?) a shift enhancer, some engine work, and an exhaust upgrade. Then we might believe your smoking everyone you race against. This being a car forum, we know how slow alero's are... so you don't need to brag about bone stock.

also, doing frequent burnouts really shows your age. i hope you like buying tires... listen to your mechanic. take it easy on the tranny. the stock one isn't built to handle what your doing to it. either do things the right way, or stop doing them.

A lil off topic but does doing heart shaped burn outs just for you pawzbear count as street racing?

Kanyon 03-13-2007 08:41 AM

I'm not bragging about anything, just stating how much slower my car is now, i was just hoping someone might have an ideawhy. I know my car is not fast, just faster than some around here. Theres a spot that we race on my buddy's private land so no it's not street racing.

jackal2000 03-13-2007 08:54 AM

the engine "learns" faster than the transmission. it could take up to a week (depending on how much driving you do) before the tranny is smart again.

Ghadsphi 03-13-2007 09:18 AM

A little more on topic, from what I understand, Yes your car needs to do some degree of learning, I'm sure some reasonable (not racing) tolerances are probably assumued in it programming. Itsounds like it's a learn of fuel/rpm/air. I could be way off since I'm a noob, but seems like that's what your car would want to learn. That stutter everone talks about would be like your computer motherboard trying that you might be running a 386 setup almost... then working up from there. The ole (and right on) better safe than blow this gimp up, policy.

I have never heard of a tranny "learning" maybe just breaking it in but not learning. The gear ratios are set at what they are. Unless your mechanic changed it then its the same.

its not about gear ratios. its about line pressures and shift points which it must learn after the PCM is reset or flashed and especially after a rebuild. its about the software, not the hardware.

antichrysler 03-13-2007 11:12 AM

I agree. The tranny doesn't do the learning but the PCM figures out your driving habits and the car drives accordingly. When I first got my car it was really aggressive with shifting, I'd lay off the gas for half a second and it would shift 2 gears. I'd give it a bit more gas and then it would shift again. Now it shifts down 1 gear and is ready to go when I press the gas again.

All I meant was that the hardware (tranny) is set at certain points and that unless those are different (gagt) then they should be the same. I should have worded it better.
