I was wondering if anyone has removed their body molding and if there are holes behind it. If not it seems like an easy mod. It would be painted underneath correct?
I don't know if there are holes behind it, but yeah, it is painted behind it. I had the displeasure of finding out when one of mine ripped off partially.
mine was starting to peel back a little in the front corner and i decided that it would look good without it altogether. I just didnt know whether I would need to fill the body panel for holes or anything like that.
no holes, just nasty sticky stuff
does anyone know where i could find pictures of this? i,personally think that it would look cleaner but am looking for other opinions as well. let me know what you guys think.
Skiboarder has his taken off. You will have to use elbow grease and goo gone to get the sticky crap off. I might do this to my car as well.
here is a pic

Thanks Naich, great pic, I knew you'd be the guy to make it happen ha. Thats definitely a project for this weekend assuming I can get into my parents garage.
Yep no holes Ihave taken mine off and it really easy once you get it started but use a heat gun and take your time and you wont have alot of glue left on the car.
yeah a heat gun works awesome and you'll have it done in like 15 - 20 min.
you could use a hair dryer too probably...
yea haha just dont do it in cold weather eh scott, lol (vinyl incident, lol)
that pics sucks. i have a bunch on http://www.cardomain.com/id/sound_xtreme/
I did this "mod" a long time ago |
Hey the link doesn't work. Anyone done it to a lighter colered car like red or something. Its kind of hard to tell on black as everythng seems to blendin anyway
Edit: WOOHOO it hit 200. I'm starting to get up there |
Take the last / off the end and it works
aleromaster, i did this on my red two door. it looks much better. doesn't really do anything in the first place...
I'm thinking of doing it myself but the only thing I worry about is mine actually has gowgaes(spelling?) in it meaning that it has been hit many times but other peoples doors(which is what it was intended for). Only worried that once I remove it some a hole will slam his door into mine.
wait for the summer...hot and sunny day will be perfect. It'll take you only 15-20 minutes to get all the residual sticky crap off then. If you do it in the cold, your fingers will get numb and be sore all day, and it'll take you about an hour.
As for worrying about a-holes slamming their door into yours, just park on the far end of the parking lot. You'll get a little extra exercise walking to the store. ;) |

B: I do park at the far end of the lots, usually because I have no choice. For some reason the stores around here are alsways like christmas. |
A: helping out the dude who started this thing...he lives in Ohio, so it'll be pretty helpful for him to know that.
B: Same here! |
A: Just trying to rub it in for al those in the cold. Just moves from NH so I know how its like trying to do things to the car in the cold :P

I did it on Friday night back at my house and it looks so much better.. I'll probably post some pics for people if they want them on Tuesday after my service.. bunnying brakes.. anyhow.. it was probably 45 degree weather and I used a hairdryer and all the glue came off no problem.. after a bath it looked factory.. thanks guys
what color is your car? If it's not red, black, midnight blue, or silver, post a pic! I haven't seen an Alero w/o the molding except in those colors...
My car is the ruby-ish maroon i guess.. they call it sport red for 2004.. im not sure the exact term for it
here's mine

I just took mine off and it is really dirty underneath around the edges of where the molding was. It isn't dirt that can just be washed off either. It can be scraped off though cause I did a little with my fingernail but it was tough. How should I go about getting that dirt off??? And do I just use goo-gone to get that mess off or is there something else that i should use as well?? Thanks for the help
just use goo gone, it will probably take off the dirt too.
Has anyone painted their bodymoulding a different colour than the car itself? I have been toying with painting the moulding black on my bright red 2 dr - anyone have any opinions, comments, or pics?
I don't think that would like good, but hey it is your car.

 that'd be ALOT of tape!
Try that man and post a pic... I'd like to see the black molding on a red car. :D
did anyone have to use touch-up paint after you took off the molding?? Did you have to re-clearcoat it?
Would electrical tape leave any sort of damaging residue, or cause any negative issues when trying to remove, or once removed?
After a while it would leave a bit of sticky stuff behind (which goo-gone will take care of easily), but you only wanna put it on long enuf to get an idea of how it will look to help you decide if you wanna paint it black, and you'd probably only wanna preview one side cuz you can't see 'em both at once.
electrical tape = vinyl
so if any tape is left behind, you'd be able to scrape it off with your fingernails, and goo-gone. |
Did anyone have to clear-coat the spot where you took off the molding?? After I took mine off, it seemed that the top layer of paint or clearcoat was off. How would I go about putting clearcoat back on and getting the right amount on there?? Do I just tape the surrounding areas and paint a layer?? Thanks for the help
I just washed the car right after I took the molding off and then waxed it and it looks like it was never there in the first place.
