SLP muffler sounds like crap

Anybody who has this muffler on their car let me ask you this:

After about 2 years the car is starting to have a ricey tone at a lower RPM than before. It used to have the rcie tone at about 4200 to 4500 RPMs but now if I open it up it gets ricey at about 3500 RPM.

Uhggg.. I thought with the V6 I wouldn't have to deal with this crap. I'm def going with another Flowmaster 80, probably in Janurary. I loved the Flowmaster I had on there before, but stupid me sold it on eBay:(

Anybody dealt with this?

Gr1m 09-30-2006 06:11 PM

this happened to me right before my exhaust fell off, rofl. i just had it U-clamped on and needed to get it welded, i had it like that for like a month or two and towards the end it started making the ricey tone, after it was welded on the tone went away, idk if that helps you lol

dood, stop screwing around with all that high-dollar stuff, run down to the muffler shop and have them drop the longest glasspack you can find. all the high tones will be gone, and a nice rumble with good flow. In two years when you can't stand the sound anymore, you're out $15.....no biggie. I'll try and post sound files once my duals are installed. Cherry Bomb FTW!!! hahahah

sound_xtreme 10-01-2006 05:47 PM

ya, i loved my flowmaster 80. brents dual 40s sounds real nice too.

clutch1 10-01-2006 06:59 PM

Good thing everyone loves the 80, I got one from Ebay that came Thursday and it's sitting in my trunk until I get a chance to put it on.
Can't wait!

Alerwhoa 10-01-2006 07:39 PM

somoene should post an audio file of the flowmaster 80 with duals... on a 2.4 IF possible that'd be sweet haha. Cause thats what i think im goin to be goin with my Magnaflow perforamance muffler is SHOT.

Also my CAT has a rattle to it thats possibly just the heat shield and nothing inside (not positive yet) whats a good fix for that problem?

Redog 10-01-2006 07:54 PM

If it's the only the heat shield, just rip it off, you don't need it and the heat shiel bolts rot away.

BJ, I'm hearin' ya on the glasspacks, but I don't really care for them too much. My mech got them on his '73 'cuda and I'm not feeling them too much. Yeah they sound good after a .030 bored over 340, but I'm not liking them behind a 207.

I like my Slp

FartCannonAlero 10-01-2006 10:14 PM

my 80 is excellent at idle and low rpm, but WOT it gets raspy, usually between 4000 and 6000 rpm.

Redog 10-02-2006 12:26 AM

^^ Raspy how? Ricey raspy?

I remember it sounding pretty good, but I didn't have a full exhasut on the car back then, just the muffler

Naich 10-02-2006 12:59 AM

My SLP is 4 years old, and it still sounds and almost looks brand new. It is actually a little more mellow than it used to be, probably because of the carbon buildup. You might wanna check and make sure it is still holding on tight.

SweetNLow 10-02-2006 02:24 AM

the 80 series drones like a mother effer at highway speeds........ i dont know how you guys with it can stand it

jturkey69 10-02-2006 04:37 AM

one aluminum turbo tube(chambered glasspack) right after the cat, and then duals after the axle...with at least 3" from the axle out...will give a nice rumble i believe...ill let ya know in a month or so

SweetNLow 10-02-2006 09:53 AM

jon if your gonna put duals in put dual 40's in

Redog 10-02-2006 11:10 AM

Do you have any pics of the way it's set up?

you think that will offer a low n loud sound? with hardly any tailpipe?

ken, i dont have pics, but i am using a Y after the axle to split the system, and using big pipe after the axle(should) give it a deeper sound since pressure, and velocity will slow down at that point?...just a hope i guess, but im tired of the slp sound since almost everyone has it...im looking for that differnt sound

Redog 10-02-2006 12:24 PM

^^ I was just out looking under the car with my tape measure.

I see if I get an offset/offset on the drivers side it would work nicely, but the only room for the "Y" with a 19 inch overall Flowmaster, is to "Y" under the muffler and bring the pipe over to the passager side muffler, or the other 40 could be mounted like the SLP is now

Also it could be inserted deep making it closer to 13 inches

jturkey69 10-02-2006 12:42 PM

well first off your gonna want to run 2 muffs, no more crossflow style. any shop can make a Y just after the axle.as the pipe starts to come down, Y it there, and run the pipe over to the passenger side..brent should have pics, also oldsmopimp had the almost exact set-up i wanted to go..but his pics are no longer up, and the price was alot, but for way good work though. I still woul love to try the turbo tube after the cat, and straight pipe out the back..lol

Satsuriku 10-02-2006 12:53 PM

ya, magnaflow/flowmaster FTW!

my mech suggested i get dynomax.....ya, i laughed at him and asked if hes the one who installed the shitty exhaust on a 2002 crysler intrepid that kicks around here and sounds like a damn weed wacker!

Redog 10-02-2006 02:05 PM

I tapped the muffler when measuring, and it sounded hollow :(

What's wrong with a Dynomax? They make a perfectly good muffler in a couple different sound levels.

Either way, Moroso Spiral-Flow FTW! (a set is getting installed on the XLR soon)
