Question...
Whenever I turn my car off and get out, and while shutting the door, I get ownt by static. Like whenever I shut my door touching the body I get staticized to the extreme. It's not cool. Anyone else have this problem?
|
Yea, I've had it sometimes. Like for a 3 days everytime I got out it'd shock the back of my ankle.
No idea why though, haha. |
it's happened once or twice in the 'Ho but I get zapped big time getting out of my fiancee's Trailblazer.
|
lmao this thread is great! it used to happen to me when i got out of my wife's gagt. i smartened up to it and started letting her close her door first ;)
im no electical guru but i would guess that something isnt grounding right. |
stupid Chronic Car Audio, see what I get for being lazy and letting them put the stereo in the little woman's ride.
|
My new Impala does this too...I am thinking about sending it back to the audio installers
|
its normal in ANY car when it gets cold out. i get zapped by nearly every car i work on every single day.
|
it doesn't get cold here though
|
^ Well sort of ... although I am from Illinois originally, now that place gets cold.

ok, we did get snow just over a week ago, but that was an abboration. It's flipping 70 today and I'm willing to bet if I drive the Trailblazer tonight after work I get zapped |
when it gets cold out the clothes you wear will create a static change and then when you get out you will discharge it on the first thing you touch that is metal. that is why in the winter time when filling up your car it is a good idea if you get back inside you car well it is filling up to get out and touch something metal before you touch the gas pump. if you don't will might spark and cause gas fumes to catch fire and then say good bye to your car.

would insurance cover that? |

hmmm, that might be worth it to get a new car
|
hazmatt, it's actually not because of the cold, it's because it's dry, it just generally happens when it's cold because the air gets so dry
|
oh, well we got dry covered. It's an art form out here, so that explains why I get shocked all the time.
|
It happens to me all the time, but i wouldn't say its because its dry, here we have about 50 to 70 % of humidity in the air regularly.
I'm gettin used to it, when closing the door i kinda slams my fingers slightly on the metal to get the static off. |
For whatever reason, it sucks. :(
|
yeh i get this about... 25% of the time. it sucks. ow!

easy solution
Jesus.. I thought everyone knew this one..
A GROUND STRAP!!!!!!!!! Put two of them if you get zapped.. As you drive, specially in cold dry air, your car develops a charge (static) from your car passing through air.. And since your car is on rubber, your car stays charged.. until you ground it out but stepping out of the car.. Use ground straps.. those weird things you seein hanging from the backs of cars that touch the ground when your stopped.. You can buy one.. or make one EASILY.. I have one hanging under my rad. and one off my bumper.. It is aircraft cable, that is screwed into my frame.. it has to touch your body or frame to work correctly. Make it JUST long enough to touch the ground when stopped. EASY as pie.. |
I knew about those ground straps, still, they are ugly. So I'll continue to get some zap and think I am an electrifying person

What your talking about is actually stats I heard once.. and yes it can happen.. but apparently only to women. Let me explain.. There have been MANY time where a women was burned and the gas pumps were ignited due to static, rarely to men. Now the theory is that women and their shoes (say high heels) can carry a charge while they walk and start pumping, the minute they touch the gas flap.. whammo.. fire.. Now another theory is, after a women starts pumping they routinely forget their purse inside, and get back into the vehicle, (creating static from upolstry or just from the car) then get back out and touch the pump and once again, fire.. The stats are out there.. look it up.. but aprently.. this happens almost always to women.. very very very few men have had this happen.. Interesting eh ? |

put one under the front of the car.. Cant even see mine unless your get on your knees.. |

could it be related from static coming out of a cell phone? (Women are always on the phone  ) |
nah
Nahh.. they've tested that one..
only a very broken cell phone could cause a spark.. Unless sony made the batteries.. hahhaa.. Exploding sony batteries are getting popular.. |

two words.....nylon pantyhose. Generates enough charge to give someone the death penalty with. That's why women here in the dry climate of AZ all look like they just stuck their finger in a light socket. |

that is awesome |
eff that. bag it and drag it

well hell if that's the case all the women around my car would see the strap |

I admit it happened when I switched from leather to cloth |
I used to have that problem in my old car. I had about a 60% chance if getting shocked EVERY time I got out of the car. I live near the ocean so it's always humid here. I haven't had that problem since I got my Alero but I did change out the floor mats like the second day I had it. No idea if that would help but your feet are probably the part that's rubbing and generating the static. Anyone with siblings knows how that works...
|
Static electricity is fun!!! :) So are wall sockets... Oh, and nine volt batteries... And can't forget those cool military cranking phones. :D
Did anyone ever notice that school bus windows taste a bit like paint? |
