Just how loud is this muffler???

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...8433&rd=1&rd=1

So I bought this muffler off eBay for $18; which is hilarious considering Canadian Tire sells these for almost $200 CAD... anyhow, I was wondering how loud it actually is. I see (hear) ricers with 5" fart cans around town and I just want to gouge my ears out. I was going for a nice deep tone that is only a menace if I punch it to the floor and if I can't accomplish that with an $18 part, then I'm going for something high end. Any ideas before I chop my stock muffler off? Is it going to worth it in terms of sound/performance. I'm not going straight pipe all the way back, just cutting off the stock and welding this one on in its place.

Thanks

blueolds01 07-04-2007 02:56 PM

looks like it could be a tad bit ricey. good thing you only paid 18 bucks for it.

Redog 07-04-2007 03:14 PM

Yeah sorry to tell you, but that is going to sound like shit.

On the plus side, you might make enough cash mowing lawns to get a real muffler.

All joking aside, It's a straight-thru with fiberglass packing inside to muffle the noise. It will be loud, but with a stock exhasut system, it won't be opressively loud. If you have the 4 cyl, it will sound more like a blender than the v6 would.

Like blueolds01 said, good thing you only paid $18 for it

troyertrain 07-04-2007 03:36 PM

yeah, i had one similar to that (chinsey piece of junk) and i wanted to blow my brains out every single time i drove my car. after about 2 months i couldnt take it and got the stock one put back on. it was not ricey, rather low, but it just drove me nuts...

NoSweat83 07-04-2007 03:42 PM

I know a few people who have had that style of muffler on their cars. They had a low tone but, just looked bad. To each their own see what ya think for $18.

telcart 07-04-2007 04:09 PM

Well even the garage was selling the identical thing for well over $100. Obviously this is a bit retail-inflated. I know it's hard to get past the $18 price tag. The thing actually looks very nice, I checked out a few Flowmasters and it's the exact same style excluding the lip on the end of the tips. Oh well, it's just an Alero... I don't plan to keep it much longer.

Satsuriku 07-04-2007 05:49 PM

personaly, if your going to do it, do it right the first time and get yourself a magnaflow or flowmaster from ebay, it will be worth it so much more in the long run. im running a magnaflow from ebay and for $115.00 CAD with shipping, you cant go wrong

teflone 07-04-2007 06:50 PM

lmao..

It will rust out in a month..

Its plastic chrome.. not chrome plated..

Poor welds, resembles weld tacks only..

If it works for more than 2 months and dosent fall off, money well spent..
Providing you install it yourself.. it will cost you money if you have to pay someone to install it..

jayson_waltz 07-04-2007 07:20 PM

for $18 bucks you can't really go wrong if you install it yourself. if its sounds like crap, o well just $18.

troyertrain 07-04-2007 07:32 PM

but, it wasnt JUST $18, he had to get it shipped to him too, so total bill was around $60...

To quote the add:

"Made Of High Quality T-304 Stainless Steel ( Light Weight )"

So it is not ANY type of chrome at all!!

SittinOnChrome 07-04-2007 07:46 PM

WTF is wrong with an Alero!?

Redog 07-04-2007 10:01 PM

^^ I caught that too.

Buying mufflers like that, maybe he'd be happier in a Civic :rolleyes2:

Sorry... even worse..

t304 S S is the tinfoil equiv. of S .S
They say light weight, because its skinned with tinfoil Stainless S.

Better then chrome plate.. but.. come on..

if it was completly S . S it would be alot more money..
The shear scrap value of t304 is $3.20 a pound..

So if it weighs more than 6 pounds your laughing..

telcart 07-05-2007 08:32 AM

LOL That is awesome, thanks for the feedback... I might just stay clear of putting this thing on my car, and finding some 16 year old with a Civic to sell it to. I get pulled over enough for the blacked out windows, I don't need to give the popo another reason.

And there's nothing wrong with the Alero, but this car was a bit of a temp while I was unsure about my job... now that I can afford much more, I'm interested in getting something a bit bigger, or a BMW :coolio: My Alero wasn't actually as reliable as I had hoped.

MixtapeMessiah 07-05-2007 01:24 PM

hahahahahahahaha I knew someone would be dumb enough one day to buy one of those POS ebay mufflers for like 20 bills.

telcart 07-05-2007 02:59 PM

eff yourself goof, I paid $18 for something most "dumbasses" pay over $100 for... or over $200 in the case of those avid Canadian Tire shoppers; I knew what I was buying. I could sell this locally and easily make several times my money back. Hell, I'm tempted to throw it on one of my beaters just to see what it actually does sound like. Clearly having paid that little for it I wasn't expecting much, I was suprised when it arrived and actually looked presentable.

MixtapeMessiah 07-05-2007 03:15 PM

you do that then homie, u get what u pay for, and I myself would rather pay 200 bucks for something good then a POS

Redog 07-05-2007 03:52 PM

We've all been there at one time or another, it's just that some people never grew out of that.

Glad to see you did ;)

alerored04 07-05-2007 06:18 PM

thank god you decided not to put that thing on. Who cares though if it was $18 or $100? Thats still $18 too much, now you know better for next time. remember, rice kills.

hahahahahaha

wake_100 07-09-2007 11:42 AM

Yeah, I had one a few years ago with the 2.4, I was very suprised that it didnt have that pinging noise that I hear civics and acura's with it was nice and deep, but retardedly loud. constant drone always loud. always there just cruisin down the road. I ened up taking steel plates and making "silencers " for it, then it sounded better. the muffler itself didnt rust, the adapter I bought from the part store did, so yes it rusted and came off. not the mufflers fault though.

white04alero 07-09-2007 12:01 PM

why in the hell would anyone get upswept exhaust

telcart 07-09-2007 01:05 PM

Why the hell would you put black rims on a white car? Because thats your preference smart ass...

I'm going to clamp this beast onto a beater and see how it sounds, but my guess is that welding this onto my Alero would cause the stainless steel to rust so I'd rather not.

Gr1m 07-09-2007 02:11 PM

a beater is going to sound very different from your alero, just clamp it onto your alero and when u find out its ricey drive around town with it and deal with it until you can afford to do the job right. on the bright side all the highschool girls will think your cool, you can pick up silent he will be waiting at the corner of your nearest highschool so you can go crusing for chicks

Satsuriku 07-09-2007 06:24 PM

thats right, he can be your wing man!!

Sound different? Apparently you haven't seen my Alero haha, it's a bloody tank (second engine, 255k on body, second paint job, it's been to hell and back twice).

But anyway, I sold the muffler today for $100 plus a 24 of beer for me to weld it on. This leaves me with a profit of around $50 not including the $40 case of beer. I really don't want to weld such cheap stainless steel though, it's just going to rust... even if it went on my Alero I likely wouldn't want to weld it... and this isn't because I can't afford the $6 in oxyacetylene.

I'm debating now between a new exhaust or just selling this car as is and getting my dream ride... BMW M5

...high school girls? If I wanted any of those forbidden fruits I don't think I'd need a car to get them.

teflone 07-10-2007 03:07 PM

Talk about the midas touch!

You turned shit into gold, good job bro!

50 profit, and a case of beer sounds like a good night out with beer for later..

:D

troyertrain 07-10-2007 03:32 PM

christ, what kind of beer did you get that costs $40 for a case?

telcart 07-11-2007 12:18 AM

In Canada any premium 24 will cost you upwards of $40

philero 07-24-2007 10:46 PM

wow....lol....what a convo to read.....lovin it

telcart 08-07-2007 02:39 PM

Ok I went back to Nova Scotia last week (I'm from there) and I couldn't find a 24 for less than $37, what the hell gives? In Ontario there's at least 5 brands that offer 24 beer for $24. Sweet jesus, a 30 pack of Blue in NYC was like $18!
