engine swap

I have a 2001 v6 alero and i would like to know if i can swap it to a 4 bagger with a 5speed trans.

AGT 07-12-2007 01:08 PM

It's possible but you will need new everything else too

strtrydr 07-12-2007 01:08 PM

IIRC ... the 3 motors all use the same mounts so the motor would be no problem but I dont know about the trans ... I would assume that is would work without any problems since the alero was available with any of the engines and trans although no manual for the v6. it is possible to do a 5 speed swap to the v6 though. I think it uses the HM-182 ... check the two sites below the got plenty of details for ya:

http://nbodypower.com/nbodypower

hope this helps :)

DUSTIN0285 07-12-2007 01:21 PM

Just trade it in for a 4 banger with a 5 spd

antichrysler 07-12-2007 02:46 PM

^x2 it's more hassle than it's worth

strtrydr 07-12-2007 03:28 PM

Dustin and Anti ... you guys really need to cut that crap out ... he asked if it was possible with his current car. Give him the answer that pertains to what he asked not what would be better to YOU.

DUSTIN0285 07-12-2007 04:56 PM

^ Ok, as per this comment then yes it would be possible, but what the hell would be the point???

antichrysler 07-12-2007 05:12 PM

^ Well yeah, anything is possible. It all depends how much he wants to invest into his car.

Something new we should know about your future plans BJ?

BlackJack 07-12-2007 10:37 PM

no, I was just trying to humorously prove a point. Just because something is possible doesn't mean it's a good idea and should be encouraged. Hell, I think filling my trunk with solid concrete would improve the crash rating when being rear-ended, but I would hope someone would talk me out of it or offer a more feasible solution or at least point out the pitfalls. No offense Derek :D

Actually it would decrease the crash test rating of your car. If you were rear ended the concrete would be pushed in to you if you were hit hard enough.

STYeattes 07-13-2007 12:52 AM

I wouldn't be so quick to ask for that.

I would just put a 5-speed on your 3400. The easiest way to do it is with a Getrag 287 "F23" transmission from a '00-'02 "2200" J-Body.

The 3400 with the 5-speed is very addicting with the torque. Not to mention the car will be quite a bit faster!

sushko 07-14-2007 12:28 AM

were would i find that trans and will it bolt up with no fab to do

Gr1m 07-14-2007 12:33 AM

there is no way your going to switch an auto to stick without fab work, only way would be to sell it and trade in for one.

Don't say that unless you've done it before.... I haven't done it on the Alero, but on other cars. It's not as hard as everyone makes it seem. After looking over my Alero, it seems as most of the mounts, brackets, etc... are fairly modular. It's basically a big hunt for the right parts to bolt on.

For more info there is a 3400 5-speed swap thread in the general performance section.

mfuller 07-14-2007 02:17 AM

Doing a tranny swap is probably easier than a motor swap.....going from a V6 to an I4 you'd have to change the entire wiring harness.

Gr1m 07-14-2007 02:39 AM

i helped my friend convert his cavy and it was like 4k for all the shit, not worth it when u can just trade in the car for another one

unless you had a mustang... good luck to ya just go to the extreme and make it rwd and turn into a new gen 442.

Alerocharged07 07-14-2007 11:51 PM

Like someone else said just trade in the V6 Alero for the 4 banger. Engine swaps are expensive so it would be cheaper to just trade the V6 for the LD9. Personally I wouldn't trade in a V6 for a 4 banger unless you planned on supercharging the 2.4. The V6 has plenty of power unlike the 2.4. A stock 2.4 lacks get up go. I would keep the V6 Alero and build a custom turbo. :coolio:

Exactly what I'm doing :)

Seriously though ... Just 5 Speed the 3400. It will not be that bad.

Hey I removed my engine all by myself so how much do you think I saved doing it my self?

As for going from 3400 to 2.4TC, it would be better to trade considering you have to worry about the computer and wiring, so just keep the 3400 and slap on a custom turbo and you'll be burning stangs and camero bumble bees:p
