Sound Dampner Install

Well today I started to work on this. Stripped the trunk. Swept out all the junk.

There you can see what "sound dampner" the factory has installed. I intend to go right over this. Already have at the drivers side...

Heres the trunk lid:

Note you need to make some cuts to relieve the material to get it to stick TIGHT to the metal. If its not tight to the metal its not doing anything for you.

My car has some "goop" on it. I think its the rust protection crap they put on aftermarket... Its like wax...

I used a razor blade to scrape most of it away. Then Brake Cleaner to get it gone. Once clean and dry I use a dewaxing/degrasing agent you use before painting a body panel. Gets all the crap off without cutting the paint like other solvents might.

Heres that same area but clean:

My Dads.

It got hit last summer... And he was totally cool headed about it...

4 years earlier he backed into it being a dumbass... Blamed it on me as my car was parked out aways... And wanted to fight about it...

jayson_waltz 03-23-2009 08:04 PM

ahh ic. damn nice car minus the dent, which is prob fixed by now anyways i remember that thread now

Ryan from Ohio 03-23-2009 10:04 PM

Yes its fixed... But the car has rust/rot issues.

Its good for what he uses it for, driving it.

Ryan from Ohio 03-27-2009 07:22 PM

This shit is not for the weak, weary or impatient... Thats for damned sure. Yesterday I worked about 2 hours. Today I worked about 4.

Heres whats underneath the back sides...

Pull those black covers off...

Ouch right? Talk about flimsy metal- nothing there...

Thats a wheel well, behind the rear seat. Mat that thing up GOOD.

Wheel well inside that pocket:

Rear deck. Its flimsy as hell... mat it up!

Cabin:

Now to do the drivers side rear and the rear deck. Still got the roof, doors and front wheel wells...

So far I used my partial roll and one full roll in the trunk. Im on my 2nd (of 3) full rolls... Just started with it.

Damn thats going to take for ever to do! I think I'll stick with the rattle...LOL

Ryan from Ohio 03-28-2009 10:30 AM

Ya man. I can see sinking in about 12 hours of life in getting this done right.

About to go work some more... weee.... not...

I gotta get that other side done up and get the roof tore apart.

cherrington17 03-28-2009 10:36 AM

so you don't have to cover every inch.. just the big flat parts?

shez 03-28-2009 10:37 AM

that looks like such a bitch. i wouldn't want to attempt taking out seats and carpeting in my alero. i'm too much of an idiot to know how to put it back and shit.

black00gt1 03-28-2009 10:40 AM

a bit of advice if it's not really all that warm out use a heat gun or hair dryer "find a heat gun" heat that stuff up will adhere alottttt better.

i've removed all that before... on a whim. but that last comment is :emotlol: worthy, regardless.

i just always have trouble removing the C pillar panels and the back deck. i really gotta figure out how those come off, one of these days.

Ryan from Ohio 03-28-2009 12:03 PM

Thursday I had a little forced air space heater in the trunk...lol

Im done for today I think. Having a bad day, dont feel good and Im literally dizzy. I put about 4 sq ft in today.

:haha: x2 i just spent all day friday and sat putting mine in 50sq ft does the back seat and most of the trunk area i still need alot to do all the doors/floor and roof area

cherrington17 03-29-2009 08:05 AM

i'd imagine the roof isn't all that hard to do.... just getting the stuff down is a pain.

surreal_awakening 03-30-2009 08:20 AM

I can say from experience, doing the inside of the doors is a royal PITA. Drivers door is done, and I've got another 20 minutes or so left on the passenger door. I started with the doors on mine, so moving forward things should get easier for me hopefully.

rocker_boy55 03-30-2009 09:23 PM

hey man what materail are you using for that?

cherrington17 03-30-2009 09:56 PM
