engine teardown!
soooo i've been working a lot on this engine, and i'm down to the meat and patata's. almost fell and busted my head open trying to get the LIM off... more than a little force was necessary. i was lifting the entire engine off the stand and it still wasn't coming off, but alas, it released. and here's the beauty i found after removing the heads....
![]() yes, that is a LOT of antifreeze in cylinder 5... lovely. ![]() and more... prettyyyyy. ![]() and some of the lovely parts i took off :) yay!! now i need a torque wrench...... |
nice, a chick whos not car retarted j/k what are your plans? S/C?
|
i'm not sure yet... just tearing it down. this is the spare one i bought for $75. as soon as i save up the money, probably in a few weeks, i'll be sending in the UIM and LIM to get ported and polished, i'm also getting a new TB at the same time!
|
cool, i wish i had a spare :(
|
sexy. engine looks nice too.
|
Nice lill lake in that cylinder
Good luck with the build :) |
good luck with the build
wish i had a spare too:( |
you dont need a torque wrench for tear down.
|
she will for the rebuild though. there isn't too much more she can "tear down".
you'll probably need 2 torque wrenches. i'd get a cheap one that does a decent range of ft/lbs and then a good one that does low in/lbs. |
yeah sorry, didn't mean for tear down... but yeah... after i got here i just kinda sat and looked at it. and then left. haha, i was like uhhhh. and that stupid accessories bracket or whatever is getting in my way, but one of the bolts is like... terrible.
|
i'd imagine getting a good torque on it would be harder when its just free standing.
having the thing bolted to 2 tons of other metal/rubber makes it easier for engine to NOT move. |
not really, most engine stands lock into place so you have no problems....
|
yeah right now it's just on a crate on a trailer we brought it home on. we haven't had enough people to move it, and I got ancy :(
|
well with just the block now, you should be able to lift it into place yourself and bolt it to an engine stand......
|
just have to share a funny comment my 15 year old sister made the other day..
"oooh when you get it back together we should put it in that car in the garage!" she was referring to the 1969 GTO. I was like yes tiff, that would be a brilliant idea!!!! not. |
that would be sweet, hahah, if i can find pictures, i know in denver there is a porchse with a 3400 in it.......i know cuz my old togs are on it......
|

That could be a definte improvement on a 912, 914 or 924. |
You should put ported/ polished 3500 heads and UIM/LIM... that would be tight. The 3500 UIM is aboslutely massive, I think you'd be pleased with it.
|

how hard is that to do? i mean obviously after you buy the parts... does everything fit nicely? |
You tearing it completely down?
may as well... My dad said the biggest improvement he seen off building a motor was having the pistons balanced. He just (last spring) rebuilt his motor into a 327 for his 69 Z28. |
Quote:
There's a slight amount of modifying, but nothing terrible. WOT-Tech sells most of what you'd need for that. |
what's having the pistons balanced? some of the pistons look to be rusting on top, correct me if i'm wrong and that's not possible. especially in cylinder 4... there was a lot of water in it, can't really see it well in the picture though.
|
build for boost with new pistons......and get the entire assembly balanced.....
|
what does balanced mean?!?!?!
|
means like, taking off material from the rods and crankshaft in places to make everything balanced as it spins
|
hmmmm ok.... hahahahhaa

its like when your drunk and take off certain articles of clothing to make aerodynamics and balance more easily attained. atleast thats how u perceived it at the time. |

OH ok. |
That isn't balancing the pistons though. Balancing the rotating assembly is where you match each piston and rod to each other, and the crank to this weight. Anything that bolts to the crank can also be included to get the balance set.
This makes the engine run much smoother, which will help everything from durability to peak RPM potential, power output, and efficiency. You should drain the coolant and spray the cylinders down with WD 40 after the water is removed. Rust in there is not good. |
Crankshafts are balanced at the factory. I used to be an engineer at such a facility. (LS7 baby!).
Ok they are balanced, but there is a balance SPEC. The truth about balancing is theres nothing perfect. I can spin the same crankshaft up and have different readings every time... |

i just got sexually excited thinking about the ls7. not as cool as the ls9 or lsa, but damn is it close. |

I love how the examples you have to use for her to get the picture.lol :haha: its all good I need good examples to understand things also, if you can relate it to xes then I will def get it then lol :scpimp: |
haha yea, because you watch that much porn.

Among the LS7 we also did the Viper, GT40 and Hummer cranks. The sister company specializes in cranks for drag racing, Callies High Performance. We made a few different prototypes for GM closely related to the LS7. Most of them had a little les stroke- Im assuming for Turbo ;) |
mmmm, less stroke. that gives me a boner too. god im a walking erection this morning. this international relations exam apparently cant kill my sex drive.

I was wrong. looks like they went supercharged... http://smallblockscreensaver.com/images/X09PT_EP047.jpg I dont follow these things... |
its ok, forced induction is forced induction at the end of the day. lol. this is a predominant reason my next car is going to be the most recent gen of cts-v, becase that ls-a is just too effing sexy. corvette perormance with cadillac luxary? SOLD!
|
i concur, i want a cts-v for my next project car something fierce....
hennessey cts-v http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd5lx0PUkGY ![]() |
i mean the lsa is a detuned ls9, so you wait till the zr1 guys get rid of their parts, or untill there is an aftermarket, and you can squeeze some crazy ponies out of that bad boy.
