Installing the AAS Kit

Alright guys, so me and a buddy are literally installing the front and rear bumpers ourselves right now and we ran into a problem... We got the bumpers off ok, but on the rear bumper (at least for now), the foam on the inside of the bumper is causing it not to fit onto the car at all. Has anyone run into this problem before? Should I just shave down the foam? What do you guys suggest? Also, am I going to run into this problem on the front as well?..and if so what should I do for that one?

If I can get an answer soon that would be awesome, seeing that we're doing it right now, lol. Thanks guys.

Oldsnut 08-02-2009 02:41 PM

I would shave it down a little at a time.

Psyfox 08-02-2009 03:25 PM

Sounds like a plan. We'll go with that and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I'll have new pictures up when I get all of it on. For now I only have the bumpers done. Side skirts and new spoiler will be on by Thursday...hopefully.

pimpalero2003 08-02-2009 04:35 PM

He'll I took mine out

DougEFresh3031 08-02-2009 06:22 PM

I took mine right out

Oldsnut 08-02-2009 08:41 PM

The styrofoam does act as a support and sound deadener IMO.

clutch1 08-03-2009 03:16 AM

Take out the foam and replace it with an air horn.. it's what I did lol.

Gr1m 08-03-2009 09:13 AM

^same here haha

Psyfox 08-03-2009 11:57 AM

An air horn?...lol. And we did end up shaving it down to literally nothing, so we did end up taking the foam off. Though, I need to get some touch-up paint because I had to dremel a couple parts to get it to fit correctly.

AleroDrime 08-03-2009 12:13 PM

pics!!!

Psyfox 08-06-2009 02:02 PM

Before pics I need to get all of it on :P. I got the front bumper on yesterday with no problems (and I did it myself :P).

BUT, today I'm doing the skirts and my new spoiler. And I'll be honest, I've looked at that AAS picture at least 100 times and can still not figure out how the hell to properly mount those side skirts.

Anyone have any how-to's or anything they can tell me to get it to fit? Because at this point I'm not even sure what goes where in order to form it.

I'd love any advise anyone can give on this.

worknprog.99 08-06-2009 02:17 PM

alot of times side skirts use the holes and clips that are already there for the plastic fender moldings... but idk never installed one of my own...

did you buy it painted or primed?

I believe "primed"...even though it really wasn't. I spent a month and a half sanding down and repriming all the parts along with painting and clear-coating them.

Anyone with an AAS kit have any ideas as to how to install the side skirts? I'm gonna go try to install my spoiler in the mean time.

worknprog.99 08-06-2009 02:22 PM

how much has it all cost you ?

Psyfox 08-06-2009 02:53 PM

Kit was $500 plus shipping, and all the painting supplies (base coat, clear coat, etc) was about $252. And sandpaper I guess was like $20...but I had so much of it.

I worked with a buddy on it who helped me paint. I did all of the sanding and filler work with plastic and such.

I think I figured out how to put the sides on, but I need to fabricate them quite a bit to get them to fit...and more than likely I'll have to touch it up when it's on.

My problem now is my spoiler. I took the bolts off from inside the trunk and tried pulling the spoiler off from the top, and it wouldn't budge. And being me, I'm afraid to just yank at the spoiler because I'll probably rip something in half. But is that all it takes to remove that spoiler is a good yank or what else needs to be done besides removing the bolts?

AGT 08-06-2009 03:35 PM

Might tap the bolts from the underneath. They are probably shifted into the metal a little plus doesn't it have grommets to prevent water damage?

Caboose73 08-06-2009 03:40 PM

Just give it a yank its just double sided tape stuff under it

worknprog.99 08-06-2009 04:13 PM

try goo gone and fishing wire

I used a hair dryer, fishing line, and goo gone to clean up the mess...worked. Now I need to put my new spoiler on (just ran out to get some hardware for it), tap in the other brake light, and then I can move to fabricating the side skirts. Hopefully I'm done today.

HOLD up.

Exactly what "new spoiler" is going on? It's either stock, Razzi, or clean and smooth... no other options.

Bad99Olds 08-06-2009 05:20 PM

maybe he bought your old wing chris

[ion] C2 08-06-2009 05:22 PM

he must've found it at the dump

i finally trashed it a month or two ago lol

Bad99Olds 08-06-2009 05:36 PM

it should have been melted down for scrap

Caboose73 08-06-2009 06:31 PM

i think its this one

cherrington17 08-06-2009 06:52 PM

as much as i don't like that wing.. it does flow with the kit. There are still alot better options. Like stock.. or razzi, though.

[ion] C2 08-06-2009 06:58 PM

No, no it doesn't. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't put it on!

Caboose73 08-06-2009 07:06 PM

I like the razzi the best but ive seen alot worse if he does put that one on

[ion] C2 08-06-2009 07:11 PM

No that's the usual wing all the local ricers put on... I've seen them on Neons, Mustangs, Civics, you name it. Every primered multi-colored, dented, rusted out piece of shit has that wing 3M taped to their trunk.

Don't fall into that crowd.

Bad99Olds 08-06-2009 07:18 PM

they dont use 3m tape....

they use wood screws

[ion] C2 08-06-2009 07:50 PM

Not this guy:

AleroDrime 08-06-2009 11:37 PM

Sorry I dont mean to thread jack but its a yes or no ?
Will a stock spoiler or anyother for that matter rattle with my subs hitting?

Psyfox 08-06-2009 11:37 PM

You're gonna hate it and I don't care. I only got the spoiler on today because I had to re-drill holes and such and find the right screws, etc, etc. So I'll put the skirts on along with the underglow when I'm down at college.

I'll get pictures up when I'm settled in and have time. I'm moving in tomorrow and then I have training for my RA position for like 10 hours a day for the next 2 weeks, so it might be a bit.

But anyway...damn you Ion. :P

Btw...I did have the stock spoiler on there.

kwhauck 08-07-2009 12:05 AM

please play nice, I am not a fan of big wings either (just like 97% of the site) and probably will think it doesn't look nice but i am curious, how did you take care of the old holes?

i betcha he didn't

AleroDrime 08-07-2009 12:55 AM

i figure hed did, if hes spent time doing the kits paint he could have fixed the holes or maybe the base of the new wing covers them

[ion] C2 08-07-2009 08:59 AM

Yep, we're all going to hate it. Stock wheels, stock engine, body kit, underglow lights, and a huge wing... and not just any wing, but the most common one found on shitpile econoboxes.

cherrington17 08-07-2009 09:29 AM

...BUT...

hes still rather new (our taste in appearances has all changed at some point) and hes getting work done. So hes starting with a kit? After that, body wise, there isn't much to do. So if he is still going to mod, he'll either go interior, or engine. Get off his back. Just because he didn't do it in the order you wanted, doesn't mean its wrong.

The point is to be different/unique/custom. Its not yours, so stop complaining.

Psy has been a decent member since he joined, earlier this year. Give him some time. Cripes, I've been here for 5 years, still have a stock engine and stock tires.

Amen brother!

StoopidAlero 08-08-2009 04:32 PM

Exactly, and some people arent into the engine modding and crap. Some people are into appearance mods. Stop bustin his balls.

wrestlingandrunning 08-08-2009 07:00 PM

wow i can't wait to clean my car up and post pictures to see what ion says

Sorry about the F bomb btw. And I used the Permatex black silicon sealant to fill the old spoiler holes (do I sound THAT stupid?). I also did it on the base of the wing since there's a hole for the wire for the LED strip on the wing...figured I'd probably get water under there somehow, so I did both bases of the wing to make it look even.

And like I said, I'm going for a showcar rather than a performance car, and I can't afford rims at the moment and am probably not gonna drop it due to the areas in which I drive (I'm currently back in Rolla, Missouri for school which doesn't have the best driveways/sideroads for lower cars...I've already scraped once at the height I'm at).

I've already redone the interior lighting (almost done). And all that's left is the side skirts, underglow, and maybe a couple of other things.

Don't hate because I didn't drop 5k into turboing, which I don't think is the greatest idea for the Alero anyway because it's a front wheel drive car. Ion, I realize that you're a huge performance guy, and I respect that...hell I think your Alero is pretty awesome, but that's not the route I'm going (notice the siggy).

If anything performance ever happens, I'll supercharge it, get new heads, larger exhaust pipe with a higher flow cat, and bore out the engine and get new pistons when the engine starts to crap on me.

Like I said...IF anything performance happens with it...and chances are it won't. I'll spend that 5k+ turbo money on something like a 94/95 Supra.

And Caboose, it's that wing except not as high. That wing is too ricery for me.

Btw, soopid and cherri, thanks for backing me up.
