AleroDrime's Exhaust Education

AKA AleroDrime's Exhausting Education
So we won't further crap on the glass pack thread Im gonna try to move my conversation here

i just got done doing some self educating http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Miscella...austtheory.htm
I thought that video was of glasspack because he posted it on a thread about cherrybombs
After reading that sites info im confused as to whether what youve done there made it louder or quieter

and please dont be offended the voices i heed most are Ion, Caboose And Abhellrazor(hes really knows the ecotec) on this.

AbHeLlRaZoR 08-11-2009 02:18 AM

I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the ecotec but I read alot about the engine.

AleroDrime 08-11-2009 02:28 AM

yeah but youve saved me a lot of ridicule and have taught me alot

plus you have an ecotec yourself, i like hearding info on ecotecs form the guys who have them

AbHeLlRaZoR 08-11-2009 02:42 AM

so hopefully what I sent you in PM will help you out, if you wanna learn about the ecotec you just got to "creep" the ecotec forums I do I abuse the search bar so much on everything I could think of, even google gets abused when it comes to that engine when I was 13 the after market performance options pretty much exploded for the engine and it was a dream engine of mine ever since reading about it HCI. Now I'm just trying to fulfill that dream.

AleroDrime 08-11-2009 02:52 AM

ive really felt the ecotec was kinda limited on availablity of main stream parts, such as k&ns and stuff. It looked to me like the market is much more suited to the 2.4 and it looks to be a dream in u have the v6

but its not bigdeal i got used to that kinda market when i had the 300cuin straight 6 in the F150, id have killed to have the 302 and woulda nutted my pants each time starting the 351( jsut because parts were easier to find)
those straight motors are legends though i beat on that 4.9 like hell and couldnt break it

AbHeLlRaZoR 08-11-2009 03:01 AM

mix, and match cavalier, sunfire parts are the same for our engine as long as they are for the ecotec. there is so many parts out there you just gotta hunt them down I'll try to update Everything Ecotec once more, I might search some other ecotec related things and put together a thread kind like an ecotec FAQ give me anything from 8 hours tomorrow to 2 days and I'll have something big.

AleroDrime 08-11-2009 10:01 AM

ok so using a muffler as a resonator does that make it louder or quieter?

[ion] C2 08-11-2009 10:12 AM

quieter...

i have two mufflers inline

AleroDrime 08-11-2009 01:01 PM

im thinking ill go with a magnaflow cat to a magnaflow muff with 2 1/4 inch piping next summer i dont care how loud it is to other pple

Valley olds 08-11-2009 01:25 PM

Without a resonator, your car will not only be loud, but raspy. Resonator reduces rasp. THe bigger the resonator, the better job it will do. For piping, you should go 2.5 instead. 2.5 wont really hurt your low end too much, and will really help as you get more into the modding process.

[ion] C2 08-11-2009 01:45 PM

Dynomax Super Turbo for the muffler, DO IT

heineck 08-11-2009 04:34 PM

^^^ that muffler sux :p
and yea do a 2.5 catback nice and loud

Caboose73 08-11-2009 05:34 PM

i have a pace setter header, some resonator i got from my exhaust shop and a dynomax super turbo muffler and it sounds good and its all 2.5inch that seems like the best size if your going to be n/a or even a charger.I highly recommend the super turbo im getting another one for my coupe when i get the exhaust done for the turbo

AleroDrime 08-11-2009 06:15 PM

i dont really plan on going that exteme with my engine

Caboose73 08-11-2009 06:36 PM

Thats not extreme at all im just covering all my bases. If i get a 2.5inch cat back plus 2.5inch cat and res i mine as well do alittle bit extra and put the header on cause im alreay under there and its the last weak point in my exhaust. Then i dont have to worry about bringing it back to have them weld in the header when i want to upgrade later.

From everything i have read, heard, and personally experienced, this is the number one choice for the 2.4L. I LOVE mine, cheap mod if you don't plan to upgrade the piping and just hack/weld.

Gr1m 08-12-2009 07:48 AM

really anything you put on a stock 4 cylinder is gonna sound like a lawn mower

AleroDrime 08-12-2009 01:42 PM

thats what the told me about a striaght 6 but a y with dual cherrybombs changed everones opinions

Valley olds 08-12-2009 03:27 PM

The difference is the six has a way higher dispacement. I believe some ford inline sixers have a 300 cubic inch displacement. That is only 2 less than their 5.0 L V8. An ecotec, I think, has only 134 CID. Big difference. I used the magnaflow muffler, and personally think its too loud for my taste. And that is using the stock resonator. Later I want to use a really long resonator to quieter down a little. If I were you, I wouldnt run without a reso. But thats just me.

heineck 08-12-2009 03:36 PM

x2 on the reso, i love the sound from my 2.5 catback and Dynomax but sumtimes theres rasp when i start it up, its not alot but enuff to bug the hell outta you

AleroDrime 08-12-2009 05:21 PM

anyone have a sound clip of 2.5 pipe and a magnaflow on a 4 cyl

AleroDrime 08-12-2009 09:07 PM

wtf i got more bad rep for this thread

i think ill go with a resonator but i wanna hear 2.5 piping with a magnaflow, i actually want the sound abhellrazor has and his is 2.25 piping

Valley olds 08-13-2009 12:58 AM

in a couple weeks Im upgrading to the 2.5. If nobody has done so, Ill post a sound clip.

AbHeLlRaZoR 08-13-2009 01:01 AM

we should just start an exhaust sound clip thread.

AleroDrime 08-13-2009 02:22 AM

good idea

Valley olds 08-15-2009 12:30 AM

http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/k...t=GEDC0085.flv

This is my magnaflow when I first got it. Just the magnaflow, stock cat, stock piping, and stock resonator. Its actually mellowed down since I got it. Anyways, yeah, without resonator, it would probably sound worse than it already did.

AbHeLlRaZoR 08-15-2009 12:56 AM

the name of this thread should be changed lol

heineck 08-15-2009 12:59 AM

it should be deleted, most of his questions posted could be answered if he ever learns to google

AleroDrime 08-15-2009 10:17 PM

point

jrim 08-16-2009 01:14 AM

eww that magnaflow clip posted sounds like a fart can.

You can say that again. I was very dissapointed with the sound. The day after I got the muffler, I actually questioned everything I had done to the car. Kind of wished I would have left it stock. Its settled down a little since then though. Also, I am thinking of getting a long resonator. Hopefully that will shut'er up a little more.

AleroDrime 08-16-2009 06:06 PM

had a set back the best exhaust shop intown doesnt want to to a magnaflow cat on my car, doesnt wanna be responsible if it throws a code. i think ill just look for a shop that is a magnaflow parts dealer and see what they say

Fi-Alero 08-20-2009 12:41 PM

I run my exaust dumped right under the firewall
