motor blew
Ok so in march i bought a 2001 two door, drove it for about 4 months and it started knocking i checked the oil and it was about a quart low, added oil then it blew??? i wasn't very happy that car is my baby and now i am debating on dropping another 2.4 in it or go custom with a 3.8 stage two supercharger??? what should i do i am missing my baby and i want to get her running gain any advice or suggestions on what i should do?????????
|
it blew = ?
Parts scattered around the ground, gaping holes in the engine, it runs but poorly, it doesn't turn over, what? |
how did u know that the engine is blown
|
Added a quart of oil and then it blew.. What kind of oil was that?
|
it won't turn over, bottom end is seized. i added 5w30 to it
|
i mean i love my 2.4 for the gas milage, i keep getting told to scrap the car and get a different one but i love it so much that i just want to get it running and keep it running without this problem, so we looked at the motor after it seized and found out that it wasn't even the factory motor its a junk yard motor with bad sensors, that could be why it never told me that it was low on oil....... should i keep with the 2.4 or what???? i want a one of a kind car here in Iowa there are a bunch of them here with body kits and rims and small mods but nothing with nonfactory motor in them...... i want to drop the supercharged 3800 in it but i don't know if that would be wise i would love some perspective of my fellow forum people........
|
i've heard its a crap load of work to get the 3800 to work/fit properly.
i'd get another 2.4 and build/boost it. |
3.5 dual cam Intrigue motor would be cool if it fit
|
boosting the 2.4 was my other idea, i have found another motor for $500 with 94k miles on it which is 400 miles less than mine has... I mean boosting it would be fun it would be the only one where i live.
|
you must beat the living piss out of it...... 101K miles!?!
|
i bought my alero with 95000km on it. it was a 2002 with a 2.2 ecotec. at 99000km (61500) the motor blew... sorta. burned 5L of oil in 4000km. and i didn't know that it burned all the oil already.

actually i babied it, i didn't really get on it unless i was on the highway passing people other than that no it was driven responseably |

yup. i got it, checked the oil. it was full. went on a vacation and didn't check it. and then it ran with no oil. but it was still covered by warrant. paid 7k for the car. the new motor cost 7k, all i had to pay was $110 for the deductable |
the 3800 is way overrated.
Yes it can fit, yes it can be fast, yes it's not worth the work IMO when a 2.4 or a 3400 and be built the same |
no to 3.8, go with another 2.4. my 2.4 spun a bearing and bent a rod at 94,000 miles so don't feel to bad, and that was 6 days after i bought it :( . it was abused b4 i had it, old rental car from somewhere in nj according to the gm dealer records. i just stuck in another 2.4 with only 30k on it at the time out of a wrecked 98 cav and $800 bucks later it worked great again. 10k later and it still runs great. i love how my engine only has ~40k on it :)
|
an engine replacement costed 7k ??
|
Quote:
yup. thats what the paper work shows. that includes new block and everything |
wow lol.. i woulda taken a 7k check lol
|
wish it would of worked like that. i would of paid the car off and just found another 2.2 cheap
|
What the hell? Someone deleted my post. Seriously what the f*** administrators?
I asked the guy if he was able to turn the crankshaft by hand, it's a 1 1/16" wrench. I asked if the engine blew up or stopped running while he was driving it or if it was something he just noticed one day when he went to go start it, because maybe it's just the starter. He hasn't really given any specifics on what happened so we don't know what's up. |

Can you post the info from the reciept? I had a Japser engine put in my Escort once, and it cost $3950, and I thought that was expensive. |

Hmmmm 94,000 + 400 = 94,400, not 101,000 |

my built engine only cost about $2100 ($1300 parts, $800 build) |

Ouch:cry: |
|
Wow, still seems like a lot for an engine, but oh well...
|
^not really for a brand new gm crate engine. and its CAD remember, its always more expensive up there.

Yeah, thats true. Didn't think about the geographic difference... |
Ok so we started tearing into the engine and its just the crank bearings, good news is that I can get the bearings and crank for about $150.00 then i am going to replace sensors as I go first one is the oil sensor that will be done when i replace the bearings and crank.
Little side note wondering how to get an aleromod.com Vinyl for the front window??? |

i had mine made custom, think cafepress makes them though, google it |

WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE:eek: lol jokes....Of coarse it's expensive that's Saskatoon Motor Products for ya and of coarse the dollar difference too between countries. I would just go to a wrecker and find an engine for it, it would be cheaper in the long run instead of puttin in that 3.8 but that's my opinion. Raz |
Ok new question on the whole thing i can get a 2.3 block but no head is there anyway that if i put my head off my 2.4 on it would it work??????? or should i just get over the price for the crank kit and buy it????????

stay 2.4L w/ 2.4L and 2.3L w/ 2.3L..... |

That oil light sensor in the head is a dummy light. If that light goes on and says Low Oil, you're already too late. A better rule of thumb EVERYBODY should do regardless of make/year/etc... is at every gas up, check the fluids, belts, battery connections, clean the windows, and check tire pressures. |

Just some info for you, the 2.4 is the replacement to the 2.3L the 2.3 fail in the head crack alot and head gasket would fail alot to.... So the GM engine builders re-did the 2.3 and came up with 2.4L I agree to stick with 2.3 to 2.3 ect... Now if you can find a w41 block now that was a racing beast .. I remember this site had all that was mantapart.... http://www.mantapart.com/ good luck on your build. |

thats ok, i've moved |

i doubt anyone on here will come up and kill you.... i've met a lot of guys on here....no one insane.... (annoying, but not insane) |

mantapart has a lot of stuff, but they're highly UNreputable in service. The new batch of 2.3L headgaskets that are now on the market, get rid of the issue of headgasket failures. If someone wanted to build a sweet motor they don't need a 2.3L block, even if it was a w41 block. W41 block is the same as any other 2.3L block of its year. The head isn't any different than a 2.3LHO. The goodies that a person would want from a w41 is the rare red IDI valve cover and the cams. The intake manifold is the same as a 2.3HO, blah blah blah. |
