easiest way for taking out tranny
so im getting a new transmission next week or so and i will be pulling out the old and putting in the new one myself in the garage... so question is... should i just drop the craddle and pull it from the bottom and install the new one through the bottom... or should i just pull the motor/tranny out together and disconnect/reconnect the new one?
thoughts would be great! thanks guys. |
I just talked to my Bro, he says drop driver side cradle about a foot and your looking at about a three hour job. :(
FWIW, he can do a LIMG job in about 3-3.5 hours. He has done a few. :coolio: Specializing in GM minivans. Good Luck! |

Most pro shops drop the subframe. I did that once with a lot of help, it's a ton of work. If I had to do it again, I'd take the whole thing out the top, but there's more steps involved. If you drop the subframe, you must get the front end aligned after, and it's hard to get the steering wheel lined up when reinstalling. |
hmmm..... sounds like i wanna pull it out the top. i was thinking that would be easiest when i posted this. but we will see. anyone else have suggestions? :)
|
Let me come over bro ive pulled more motors than I can count ill help ya fooo free I just charge in ciggs
|
lol id have to buy you some cause i quit for new years lol.
|
I would comment with what i though would be easy but i have only ever taken out RWD Trans i don't know anything about ours... but id say take it from the top
|
yeah i think im gonna just do that. only other question is should i get the built 4t45 auto for the car or should i go to milzy and get a 6 speed swap for my car.
|
^6speed swap!
|
^^agree with him
|
right right. i was thinking that too. i dont know we will see. i was thinking on waiting till i build the car for the 6 speed swap and just do a built auto. but both are still possibilities..... options options options...
the 6 speed is an F40 transmission btw. i can get a spec stage 2, or a spec stage 3 with purchase of kit.. or a G6 Dual Mass Clutch which is an additional 200$. heres what all it comes with... -0 miles F40 6 speed transmission -MMS N-body 6 speed transmission mounts -left, right, and center axles -clutch -flywheel -master and slave cylinder -clutch lines -shifter cables -shifter -clutch peddle assembly -clutch cylinder pipe sleeve -neutral safety switch -ARP flywheel bolts Price:$3,749.99 |
if you have to do the tranny now, why spend money on the auto when you want the 6 speed? if you can afford it now, do the job once... plus it will give you time to get used to the 6 speed for when you do build the motor some more...

good point but i was also thinking i could sell the built auto on here. then buy a 6 speed, but now kinda aiming towards 6 speed. |
I agree, but at the same point, it will be harder to sell simply due to the size and trying to ship it will be a pain... might be harder than you think, which is why I suggested just doing the 6 speed right away if you can afford it...
|
$3,800!

cant complain with everything that it comes with. i dont think its a bad deal honestly. |
i dont think anyone on here has a 6 speed in there V6 alero do they? :) i might be the first on here......... :D thats if i actually do get it instead of the built auto.
|

ya you would be the first i think it has been done with a grand am i am not sure. here is a how to. http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73212 |
I think buying the mounts from milzy and the rest from gm would be cheapest... But they are in ohio so I could roll with you out there to pick it up... Would be cheaper than shipping it
|
if your planning on selling the auto tranny on here afterwards, good luck I honestly ( not trying to be a rooster ) think your gonna sell it anytime quick and thats even if you do sell it on here. just buy the 6 speed if thats what you truely want

yeah ive seen that thread once awhile ago. might just be taking it to milzy and having them install it. Quote:
yeah i think im taking it to milzy. remember scott? stayed with us at ass? his bro lives in oh and we are supposed to stay there while they work on it... or hes gonna get a free hotel like when we went to ass. and i omly have 2 seats cause i ripped out the back ones lol Quote:
i think i will be going with the 6 speed. you have a point cause the whole shipping thing, and take a min to sell. i emailed mike at milzy asking when i could take it there. just waitin for a reply |
From looking at Fiero forums, and other motor swapped cars the prefered manual transmission to hold power is either the Getrag 282, or the F23. Lots of high power fieros have blown apart numerous f40s. That's why the mentioned 5 speeds are preferred.
|
but how much power are they running with it? the f40 is capable up to 295 tq.
the F23 only holds 170 tq cant find tq specs on the 282 |

Straight cut gears.... Um yes!

talked to mike today he said after payment he could get parts for it within the week i think and can bring it in, take about a week to do he said. :/

400+whp 500+tq One member went back to the f23 after 3 failed f40s...and the has been fine for 3 years. That member is running a 700hp supercharged SBC........:scpimp: |
hmmmm idk so many choices!
|
After thinking over it for so long. If you are gonna drop 3 or 4 grand, why not just do a full t5 swap? I wish I would have sometimes. I might still in the future. I'd like to break some records first though.......
|
that would be a pretty good challenge to make it work.

There is an LS7-powered Fiero that was built right up the road from me. Has a F40 with cyro'd gears and a Quaife LSD. It makes lots of power and hasn't blown up yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbVrzt0aaGQ |
dang right on. :D
