it's not that hard, and you can even get a kit made for ga's (same mounting for the alero) for 40 bucks. you'd probably pay that for running to home depot and buying it yourself. and the install is pretty simple.

Very good question, but this kit is not made out of some rinky dink fence hinges. Some people try to sell you a universal kit that is good "for all cars". All the kit contains is a set of fence hinges and slide bolt. If you want your trunk to rattle around, NEVER sit correctly and leak water every time it sprinkles GO FOR IT!!! This kit was specifically designed for the 1999+ Grand AM. All the parts where machined specifically for this car. If installed correctly when the trunk is closed you should not notice any difference."

Alignment is thrown completely off

The paint around the pivot holes scrape off, leaving you with this. And even though you can't see in this photo, the metal has partly worn away. The only thing keeping the lid on is the other screw and having to tighten the heck out of the screw that's barely holding the metal together.

Your trunk will never close right again. Even if i got that side to lay down like the adjacent side, the other side would counterweight and become propped up.

And this final photo sums up everything: worn metal, bad alignment, half closing (which leaks very badly in a car wash or in a storm), EVERYTHING.

As you can see, and as the kit above says, the metal has to be cut for it to pivot. And as we all know, you can take the toughest material in the world, cut it or even drill one hole in it, and it's lost all it's previous structual integrity. With the metal cut away, you'll notice how flimsy and thin the remaining half is. And this is done to both sides. The bad alignment and propped lid are a result of too much movement during normal day operation, simply because the lid isn't as solid as it once was.

So if you do this, it's only gonna look good for about 6 months. After that, it turns to crap. When i eventually get my car painted, i'm getting rid of that thing. And that GA kit is crap, in terms that it will turn to crap. But they dont tell you that.
