I was thinking about changing to synthetic oil or part synthetic, but i would like to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of it. can anyone discuss this with some authority? Has anyone done this yet?

VPLaVarnway 02-18-2004 03:39 PM

i've been told if you are gonna go from conventional to Synthetic to run the half Conventional half synthetic first then on the next oil change run the full synthetic....not sure if you have to but i did and i haven't had any problems and it felt like it revs a lil faster....i know it works hella good in v8's i spun a rod bearing in my Nova when I first put synthetic in it.....i over revved it the first race after switching....

No personal experience with it yet... but I work with a guy who says the reason he's gotten over 200,000 miles on each of his last 2 cars is because he's only used Mobil 1 full-synthetic.

Believe it or not... Wal-Mart does full-syn oil changes for only $30. Just make sure they put the drain plug back in when their done.

Mobil-1 is the best way to go. synthetic oil is slicker and stays cleaner longer, it's all I ever use

StealthAlero 02-19-2004 12:48 PM

Well I guess your supposed to have the oil tank pumped if your going to switch from part synthetic to full, but i didn't. I guess some dealerships have machines for it, but it doesn't matter. Just don't switch back once you switch though! I've been running Mobile1 Fully Synthetic Oil in my car for 10,000 miles now. IT ROCKS!!! Official Oil of NASCAR.

King Asoka 02-19-2004 01:53 PM

why cant u switch back?

StealthAlero 02-19-2004 06:14 PM

I heard it'll kill your engine.

Oldsmopimp 02-19-2004 06:54 PM

Ive been running mobile one Syn 5W-30 since I hit 2,000k. My car runs like it did when it had 20 miles on it. Im at 35K now. When I did my first oil change I just drained the stock oil out, and dumped in the mobil one. Ive had no problems. I also use a bottle of synthetic fuel injection cleaner every oil change.

In regards to ur post, I honestly dont know the true advantages/disadvantages. I just jumped on the syn bandwagon with everybody else. I do think alot of what u hear is/are myths tho.

StealthAlero 02-19-2004 07:09 PM

I wish i saved the pages i read to quote from these sources but i didn't so..... I dunno you can try it and see what happens. But it can't be good switching between fully synthetic and not all the time.

King Asoka 02-19-2004 07:13 PM

i dont plan on switching back from synthetic, i was just curious as to why u shouldnt. Thanx for the info guys, im gonna switch to Synthetic next oil change.

3.4Alero 02-19-2004 09:03 PM

I believe it is because of the way it conditions your seals. If you go back, your seals could fail.

Stealthalero and 3.4 are right, once you switch you can't go back. I have been running mobil one for three years and 65,000 miles. the engine runs better and smoother. I had a tech at autozone ask me this. I was there getting a DTC number and he asked me to start the car, I told him that it has been running the whole time we were out here. He replies, wow that thing runs quiet. The nice thing about synthetic is that you can go longer between changes and it is a better product.

Fast Eddie 02-20-2004 12:30 PM

The main advantage of synthetic is that it is not prone to it vescocity (which is usually better to begin with), ability to flow, breaking down nearly as easlily as conventional oil. Guys in NASCAR qualify w/ 0 weight and some race with it, I'd think if you can have the OIL temp guage pegged in a NASCAR for 300+ miles and the oil does not turn to sludge there is something to be said for it.

That being said, it means you do not need to change your oil as often b/c the oil is not breaking down, however the oil still gets dirty, How dirty is more a function of the oil filter, obviously, and how the engine is running, but I bet the syn probably comes with better detergents; so it still needs to be changed.

As for the MYTH about changing from dyno juice to syn and back, its just that, a myth. the only time this really comes into play is while the engine is still breaking in, usually the first 3-5K miles or so when the seals and everything are seating. then you want conventional.

As for sucking out all the old oil and what not, its cool to just drain the oil conventional oil and dump in the syn. even if there is some old stuff in there your cool, what do you think the blend stuff is, part syn, part dyno.

Disadvantage is syn costs more.

King Asoka 02-20-2004 12:47 PM

thanx eddie, just what i was looking for!

freeze12 02-20-2004 01:05 PM

I use Walmart brand (made by Quakerstate) 5/30 full syn. in My 01 2.4 Alero 18.000 miles & it runs great & the oil is $2.97 a quart + I use AC Delco Oil Filters.

leroBob 02-20-2004 01:25 PM

i use Mobil full synthetic and FRam X2 oil filter
i'm still wondering about this hole X2 thing?
6,000 miles huh.........but i'm lazy as hell and thats one less step for me, plus the quick drain love it
