I am close to making a decision on getting an amp. I have been looking at alternatives to a kicker to save some money but still get a decent amp at the same time. Would a rockford fosgate 401s be a good amp in general (planning on hooking up a couple polk momo 10s, 600watt max each and 300 watt rms each). Stopped by Best Buy today and was told the best way to wire this amp would be to put both positive wires from the subs into the positive on the amp and same with the negative, to achieve bridge mode. Lmk what you think......

There's a link in my sig to the amp I have. It's worked well for me, hits really hard, even with a crappy sub.

Umm... is this a mono amp? or a 2 channel?
the subs are what 4 ohm? DVC or SVC? I think the guy is trying to tell you to bridge them mono, and if they are SVC 4ohm then that would be a 2 ohm load on the amp.. about right. But when it comes to finaly wiring it up u need to be carefull... |
The 401s is going to run at 400 watts rms bridged into one channel, but that's at 4 ohms. Your subs are going to make either a 2 ohm load (wiring in parallel, like you said) or an 8 ohm load if you wire in a series. Either way, that's not going to work with that amp.
Even if the amp ran 2 ohms bridged, like it would have to, it's only going to put 400 wrms on that channel...that's 200 watts per sub. Since those subs are 300 watts rms, even if it's all the way up, it's like running the subs at 67%. I may be wrong, but I don't see how the two subs could work with that amp. I'd suggest something that can drive 600 watts into one channel at 2 ohms (600x1 @ 2) or 300 watts into two channels at 4 ohms each. Also keep in mind that when you bridge an amp, you often won't get double the power as in stereo mode...it may say so, but it's usually less than that. Like this one: JBL 600.1 Or this one: RF Punch 601s |
Ok, now I know that u match RMS rating up, but my only question here is wouldnt an 1800watt max power amp be too much even though its rated at 600w x1 @ 4 ohms bridged, which will fit perfect for my subs RMS rating?
|
Yeah, it possible that might be a bit much. But remember that if you're talking about peak power, those two subs will soak up 1200 watts at peak. So if you don't totally crank it, you'd be okay. Lots of peak vs. rms references basically tell you to ignore peak power.
You should be careful not to overwork an amp anyway, since a distorted signal from an overworked amp will trash the speakers long before they'll give out from a clean signal that's too strong. If the subs are being overpowered, you'll hear distortion from them, so just turn the gain down on the amp or turn the volume down on the deck. Correction on my previous post: I misread what you said...the 400 watts into one channel bridged at 4 ohms would work, since you're using two channels when you bridge the amp. But...amp work harder in bridged mode...why not just get a monoblock amp made for driving subs? Given all other things equal, an amp that can give you the 600 watts rms that you need with "extra" power at peak is going to be better than only getting 200 watts for each sub and either underpowering the subs or overworking the amp, especially if it's bridged. BTW, which amp were you looking at that pushes 600x1 bridged at 4 ohms that's also rated 1800 watts max? |
The rockford fosgate 601s you mentioned above has the 1800watt max w/ 600watt rms x1 @4 ohm bridged.....

you cant go wrong with RF. Good products, I use 2 BD1500 on my subs and 1 301 On my highs. Wont use kicker again.(good products but bad warranty.kicker)
|
I actually have a 401s Hooked up to my Brahma right now... it pounds pretty loud, even thought my Brahma is being sadly neglected with its power.... oh well
|
I got a kicker and it has a-lot of power...Plenty for my speakers...
|
well unfortunately something has gone wrong, I had won a rockford fosgate 601s on ebay, got the money order and sent it, and now somehow the seller hasnt received after 3 weeks....either lost or hes trying to steal the money, which if he is, then hes one dumb tool cause the post office will nail his butt on federal charges, either way I know i will get my money back but just the fact that its gonna be another month before that happens and my trusting buying over the net diminishes...what a shame...
|
Ah man that sucks, thats why i only use Paypal.....even though their are still ways for moron sellers to complain....but still, hope everything goes well, i know u wont be dissapointed.
