-   -   Why Does The Little 4 Cyl. Engines Take More Oil? (http://www.aleromod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13293)

I hate to start a whole new topic for this, but i had to.

Ive always wondered why the 4 cyl. take more oil than our 3.4's?????

And another question. I just bought a drop in K&N Air Filter, does anyone else have this????? if you do, have u noticed a difference in performance?

Thank you to anyone who takes the time out to respond to this.

i had a drop in k&n back in the day. back then i would swear and declare it added performance and what not but hind sight tells me it was a seat of the pants kind of thing. all it really does is improve gas mileage a wee bit.

True that, most mods will but up MPG.

I would think the 4 banger takes more oil since it will rev a bit more and heat up quicker. PLus it most likely have a bigger oil pan

what do the 3400 rev to??? my ecotec revs to 6400 and keeps making power right up to rev line

Cliff8928 06-16-2006 01:14 PM

As far as i know, the fuel cut-off on the 3400 is 6200 RPM. Fuel cut-off is at 6500 on the Ecotec. I know the V6 is mechanically limited to about 7000 rpm before the rods need to be upgraded.

5800 rpm for the 3400

Cliff8928 06-17-2006 02:11 AM

Wow, that sucks... it definitely has much more potential. Mine is limited at 6200.

how much oil does the 3.4 take.? I know the ecotec uses 5 qts.

Redog 06-22-2006 06:45 PM

The 3400 in the Alero is red lines at 6250, but is can rev to around 6300 to 6400.

My mech, and s/c alero (a GM tech in Denver) both said that

DrCaputo421 07-02-2006 03:08 PM

The 3400 takes 4.5 quarts.

I was surprised when I first got the Alero. I have never seen a 4cyl take 5 quarts of oil. I have had 3 other 4 cyl cars, and most took 4 qts for the exception of my Mazda Protge, and it only took 3 qts.
