I don't know if this has been covered off yet, but I did try to search for this topic and got nothing...

I was wondering if anyone has removed the hood insulation, and what if anything was the result? My insulation is in crappy condition and looks like it has been torn in the past (not since I got the car). Besides removing a couple of pounds does it really do much?

Thanks for the advise..

protects your hood from the heat of the engine..wouldnt be there otherwise...not sure what would happen if you removed it , ie...warping

BLK03GXS 03-12-2004 05:31 PM

The 2 main purposes of the insulation that i know of, are to
1: Keep extreeme engine heat from damage'n the paint on the hood,
2: help the engine warm up Quicker..

I would rip it out :D lol

I was looking on GAGT and most of the cars I saw on there didn't have the insulation, and I thought since our cars are the same that it doesn't matter if it's there or not... not too sure though

at least in the past, it was more for reducing engine noise than anything. should be safe to remove.

I always thought that it wsas to help smother an engine fire if there ever was one. My impression was that the plastic tabs that hold it on melt and the mat dropps down is suposed to smother the flames.

should be safe my gx doesnt even come with it

lol, the main purpose is, if there is a fire, the plastic screws melt, and the pad drops down reducing the fire damage. U can remove it, yet you do risk two things, warping the hood of ur car, not sure to what extent. And if there is a fire or something there will be more damage to your car. Its a saftey thing, alot of cars don't have them. I am removing mine tomorrow lol .

My o1 purchased new never came with Hood insulation. FYI

mines been gone over a year. No problems, and if you have an engine fire, its toast anyways, that little pad will do nothing but burn.

velocity 03-14-2004 10:27 PM

I ripped it out of every car I've ever owned. All it does is keep your engine runnign warmer and muffles some sound. About the fire suppression stuff, I've never had an engine catch on fire so I can't comment. But if your engine catches fire you've got bigger problems and a tiny ass fire blanket won't do poop for it.

justinusaf 03-15-2004 10:41 AM

If its torn. Take it out. I personally dont plan on my car catching fire.

Maverick 03-15-2004 11:22 AM

Sweet.. that's what I figured, none of my other cars have ever had this. Who would want to muffle the sound of you engine anyways?

Pimpalero03 03-18-2004 01:21 PM

hey look at this. the installation did alot for this car. my buddys grand am burned down and the insullation is gone, along with everything in the engine bay. lol
