clicking when I steer

I hear and feel a clicking sound when I steer. it happens when I turn the wheel from going straight, and when I approach the the lock at each end of the steering range of motion.

it doesn't change how the car handles, but the noise is very annoying. Any ideas? I don't want to take it in, have the shop check it out and get shafted into getting an entire new front suspension. If you guys have more specific ideas/diagnosis, let me know,

Thanks.

If the noise is there when turning the wheel it is probably the coil for the airbag harness making the noise.

Could also be the steering shaft, or CV joint.

I think its your intermediate shaft in your steering column it sounds like it needs greased.

Bearing plates in strut tower's or intermediate shaft's, not steering column

thanks guys. gonna get it taken care of soon...well, as soon as this jobless bastard gets some money. :(

When you hear this clicking sound, is it coming from inside the car, or do you hear it outside the car?

Some people are suggesting suspension issues while others think its in the column.

AlbinoMonkeyRat 01-08-2007 12:40 AM

it's sort of in the middle...but I know the steering pump is accessible from the interior of the car on the passenger side under the dash. So It's hard to tell really, but those answers (bearing plates, most likely) convince me more than the others.

-I've had tie rod issues before, so I'm pretty sure it's not that.

oh...it's not a constant clicking. it does one click in one direction, and another click on the way back.

at the end of the steering rod they have a little plastic piece that clicks when you fully make a turn, usually only in one direction, GM calls it the "zipper effect" its normal for our cars. Inless its a loud metal on metal click, youd wanna check ur cv joints same shit happened to me, replaced them and its good now

mine does that sometimes too. especially in colder or rainy cold weather. I can get it fixed anytime i want i just need my car so i dont want to turn it in to my dad for a day.

i noticed that my car also makes a clicking sound when turning the steering wheel left to right real quick...almost sounds like a knocking noise but the dealership said that it is normal and showed us another car they had of the same model that does it so i'm not sure...seems kinda weird to make it like that..any sounds can be annoying and when you listen for one then you start to hear any little peep squeak

Ya i do hear some clicking sound when i turn also, but it looks like some ordinary power steering noise. It happens when turning the wheels while I'm not really moving.

I talked about it with some other Alero owners I know, and they all told me their car was doing something like this and not being worried.
