Alberta Insurance
Im not trying to exclude the rest of the world with this thread, but its about insurance in Alberta regarding customized vehicles(perfromance mods)
I was at my insurance agent the other day and they told me that if I were to get custom performance parts for the engine or suspension that I wouldnt be covered if I were to get in an accident.I was just curious if any people from Alberta had performance mods on their cars if they could tell me who they were insured withand what theyre rates were like.Any response would be great. Also Im curious as to what laws there are in other provinces and states regarding this topic. |
they charge more money per month if you have a SCed car here, but it would be covered, you just have to claim it under insurance

^ Exactly. A NORMAL insurance company will cover you BUT increase your cost. I asked my insurance on a stereo install and they told me up to $1500 for a stereo is covered if you have the receipts. No company should deny you something like this. People have been modifiying cars since they started building them ;).
I will email my insurance company and ask them about performance modifications. |

Thats what I thought as well but not with AMA they said they dont even insure 4X4s with lift kits and or aftermarket off road suspension. The lady there also said they dont insure tow trucks either.I think its messed but I guess ill have to shop around. In Ontario do you have public or private insurance? |

Same here in manitoba with the stereo system thing, but now the downside here is if you have performance parts on a car, autopac won't give a damn, you can drop a new motor in it and put 2000hp in it and all they will cover you for the amount the car is worth in the blue book, also it depends on if your 50% or more responsible for the accident + sur-charges on your licence. They will do their best to give you as much money you deserve but that totally 100% EXCLUDES performance parts, body kits, paint jobs....only stereo equipment, some personal belongings, tv set-ups. ect. ect. ect. (these last few you have to have bills for) |

1) Ontario is private so we pay through the nose for insurance. 2) I emailed my insurance company and it looks like I will be having a discussion with them. I asked them what kind of modifications are allowed and so on. First SENTENCE that came back was "Most insurance companies do not like modifications if they are to enhance performance for street racing. So any engine modifications are queried." So they have classified me as a street racer even though I have never done it. I will be emailing them back and basically writing a rebuttal. That is unacceptable if they automatically think you are a street racer just because you like to modify a vehicle. |
My insurance company wanted to know if the vehicle was "customized". I don't know if there was a difference in pricing. That was with Aviva.

i had allstate for 10 yrs, when i finished my riviera nothing on the car was covered, meaning none of the new parts or re chormed parts were covered
then i bought the alero still nothing even when the car was stolen nothing was covered then a friend of mine told me that state farm covers modified cars everything even down to lug nuts on my car i dunno what kind of insuracne you guys have up there but here state farm is a big one and the shop i work for we are a DRP shop for state farm and let me tell ya state farm covers and fixes everything |
The best Advice with insurance companies are to shop A LOT! Of all the companies I've talked to, the only thing that performance modifications changes on your insurance is that they wont pay for the mods if you crash, they'll only pay for what the car is worth on the market if you havent mentionned the new mods to them. They also will ask you if there are any appearent mods on the car (Rims, paint, sound system) to know if your car will be more attractive to thieves.

I'm with state farm. They treat me pretty good. I just take the car/truck in after I do something to it and show her. Sometimes she take pics. I like doing it this way that ways there's no doubt the stuff was in my vechile
