Disable the passlock

I have been reading a crap load of info about how to disable the passlock. One way is use a resistor which none of them i have read. It doesnt say where to put the resistor exactly. I have found the tiny yellow wire (the passlock data wire). My problem is that my after market remote car starter can start my car everytime. As soon as I put my key in and go to ON and press on the brake, it shuts off. Plus, i cant seem to start my car with the key only. It will crank but no fire. Im pretty sure its got sumthing to do with the passlock. Oh yeah, my car will start with the key every once in a while. I was thinking that the temperature outside was changing enough to change the resistance of the resistor in the ignition to make the passlock think im trying to break in the vehicle. Does anybody have any suggestions. Thanks.

Does the key go in loosely? I just had my ignition cylinder replaced because the car would crank but not start. The night before it would only start occasionally.

My car, the passlock failed and disabled my car for good.

The key does not go in loosely. If I could, I would like to remove the passlock from my car forever. Or if I had a schematic on the passlock system then I could totally remove the passlock and install something that would produce the same signal that the passlock gives to the PCM that way I shouldn't have this problem. When you said that you disabled your car for good, does that mean that you can never get it running again?

Does anyone know where I can get schematics on the passlock?

I got it running after replacing the ignition cylinder. The key on mine was going in loose compared to the brand new ignition cylinder.

Actually if I remember correctly in Eh_Nigmas new interior thread someone made a post about how to disable Passkey

Til It Sleeps04 06-01-2007 08:32 PM

I just checked out Eh_Nigmas new interior thread and I didn't find anything on disabling the passlock. All I saw was stuff about the interior. Does anyone actually know how to disable the passlock?

IIRC ... you need to measure the ressistance between the passlock wire and the black wire (i think) the go to Radioshack and buy a resistor of the same ohms and solder it like a bridge between the two wires. That should do it.

Hey, sorry, been busy as hell...

This is all compliments to Joel - so all the credit goes to him. Here are the steps he told me to follow, and it works like a charm now.

1. Start the car.
2. Cut the yellow wire
3. Measure resistance from the keyside to the black wire
4. Solder in the resistor(s) from the PCM side of the black wire.

Simple, works, haven't had any problems since I followed those steps. Hope this helps.

I have heard of those steps but I cant start the car with the key. Im assuming that the resistance in the ignition switch is wrong so if I put in a resistor that matches the wrong resistor, what good will that do. Either that (the resistor is wrong) or the PCM is detecting the right resistance but the PCM is comparing it to the wrong resistance. Does anybody know about how much their resistance they measured was? Plus do I solder the resistor in between the keyside of the yellow wire and the black wire (the black wire should not be cut) or do I put the resistor between the PCM side of the cut yellow wire and the black wire?

When you say start the car, do you have to start the car with the key or can you start it with the remote car starter then just put the key to the ON position in the ignition. Reason being that I cant start the car with my key.

Ok. I just measured the resistance between the yellow wire (keyside and other side just to be sure) which is cut and the black wire which I only stripped the insulation. And I got the indication of an open resistor. I checked for voltage at all three points (both sides of the yellow wire and the black wire) and I go zero voltage. I dont know if that is normal or what. Im not sure but what if the bypass module (for the remote car starter) was installed and the people who installed it already cut the yellow wire upstream from where I cut the wire (by upstream, I mean more closer to the key side of the cut I made). I didnt see any evidence of them doing that but I dont know. Im still very desperate to get my car started with my key so that I can eventually drive it. Any help?

Eh_nigma 06-03-2007 11:47 AM

Those steps given were in order to get my car to start with a starter switch setup I have, and yes, to avoid using the key to start the car (just leaving it in the "on" position and using it as a master power key. Aside from that, I'm out of suggestions as I haven't done what you're looking to do.

Now its being wierd, the security light is on solid when i remote start the car. Im not sure if thats good or bad. I still cant start my car with my key.

Yeah that's bad. That's what mine did and it ended up being the ignition cylinder.

That just means the Passlock is going into a fault status. As long as you don't cut battery power, you should be fine.

Now it works but only partially. It seems that I have to start the car in a pattern. When I start the car with the key it will work but the next time I start my car it will not work and I will have to start the car with the remote car starter. The next time I have to start my car, I am able to start my car with the key. The next time I start it is with the remote car starter. So I have to keep switching the way I start my car. I know thats not right and there's still something wrong but at least I can start my car with my key and drive it. Yesterday, I tried to take apart panels and what not to access the passlock data wire coming directly from the ignition switch. I eventually got the damn thing apart and I couldn't see any obvious problems. Once I put it all back together, I am now able to start my car with my key only once after starting it with the remote car starter. Oh well, it works (kinda).

Mischief007 06-04-2007 08:23 PM

When I had this problem, sitting for 10 minutes, it would start. Consecutive cranks wouldn't start. Then 10 minutes later, it would start again. In the morning though it completely wouldn't start.

i had the same thing going on with mine i got a ignition swtich from a savage yard from a grand am for 30bucks put it in and the car starts very time.

Til It Sleeps04 06-05-2007 07:54 PM

do u have to get a new key if you get a new ignition switch
