engine swap
I have a 2001 v6 alero and i would like to know if i can swap it to a 4 bagger with a 5speed trans.
|
It's possible but you will need new everything else too
|
IIRC ... the 3 motors all use the same mounts so the motor would be no problem but I dont know about the trans ... I would assume that is would work without any problems since the alero was available with any of the engines and trans although no manual for the v6. it is possible to do a 5 speed swap to the v6 though. I think it uses the HM-182 ... check the two sites below the got plenty of details for ya:

Just trade it in for a 4 banger with a 5 spd
|
^x2 it's more hassle than it's worth
|
Dustin and Anti ... you guys really need to cut that crap out ... he asked if it was possible with his current car. Give him the answer that pertains to what he asked not what would be better to YOU.
|
^ Ok, as per this comment then yes it would be possible, but what the hell would be the point???
|
^ Well yeah, anything is possible. It all depends how much he wants to invest into his car.

hahaha, good point......do you think it would be possible for me to put a GE F110 engine in my daily driver? |

no, I was just trying to humorously prove a point. Just because something is possible doesn't mean it's a good idea and should be encouraged. Hell, I think filling my trunk with solid concrete would improve the crash rating when being rear-ended, but I would hope someone would talk me out of it or offer a more feasible solution or at least point out the pitfalls. No offense Derek :D

lol strdyr attached a plane to his roof..... i suspect he may know |

Actually it would decrease the crash test rating of your car. If you were rear ended the concrete would be pushed in to you if you were hit hard enough. |
seriously, ill trade you my 2.2 ecotec for your 3400...

I would just put a 5-speed on your 3400. The easiest way to do it is with a Getrag 287 "F23" transmission from a '00-'02 "2200" J-Body. The 3400 with the 5-speed is very addicting with the torque. Not to mention the car will be quite a bit faster! |
were would i find that trans and will it bolt up with no fab to do
|
there is no way your going to switch an auto to stick without fab work, only way would be to sell it and trade in for one.

Don't say that unless you've done it before.... I haven't done it on the Alero, but on other cars. It's not as hard as everyone makes it seem. After looking over my Alero, it seems as most of the mounts, brackets, etc... are fairly modular. It's basically a big hunt for the right parts to bolt on. For more info there is a 3400 5-speed swap thread in the general performance section. |
Doing a tranny swap is probably easier than a motor swap.....going from a V6 to an I4 you'd have to change the entire wiring harness.
