Overpowering a Sub?
 

I'm looking at getting this amp: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...KAC-8103D.html
to power a 15" Memphis PR Series sub. Memphis claims 250w RMS power handling and Kenwood says 300w RMS for the amp. Would it hurt the sub or make it sound too bad overdriving it by 50w RMS?

It would probably work just fine. If you run it at high volume a lot tho, just turn down the settings on the amp a little. My buddy's got a 600rms bazooka NOS edition sub powered by a 850rms amp. With the amp settings turned up, it sounds like its gonna die (and it would), but we just turned them down a ways and he runs the stereo at full volume no problem and it sounds like its doing fine.

You're talking about the bass gain, right? That doesn't really change the power the amp sends to the sub, just the bass level.

Memphis isnt a shit company that gives the absolute maximum the sub can take before blowing...

Like say a Sound Storm sub. it says 100 WRMS, you sure as shit better only give it 75 WRMS.

Would that be a decent setup? Or should I go with a MA Audio setup. I can get a MA amp (on sale for $100) that puts out 400w RMS @ 4ohms and 800w RMS @ 2ohms. If I got two MA Audio subs ( http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=14703 )that handle 300w RMS each, would that be a better setup?

MA is a bunch of junk.

Buy something decent the first time around otherwise you will just have to spend that much more money AGAIN after you realize you bought trash.

Can you recommend something for around $400 minus box? Would the Memphis 15 be a decent sub?

Sorry about all the questions, just want to make sure I do my research before I spend my hard-earned money.

As long as you don't fry the voice coil they are pretty easy to fix, so go for it, or better yet just get a bass cd to tune with and just step it up until you reach a comfortable level for yourself. That's how I tune my system. Got to ask yourself what are you going for alot of low freq bass, and not a lot of audio,or a complete music experience with good audio and bass.
