Power Steering help

Hey I have a 2000 Alero 2.4L and my steering wheel seems to be locked up. I checked the power steering fluid and there is more then enough. I can drive it but it requires a hell of a lot of man power to turn the wheel. What could be the problem?

pawzbear 10-21-2007 10:21 PM

maybe the pump or maayybbe like mine.. i actually broke something off in shaft thingie.. do much drifting in your cul-de-sac? lol
Anyways it was only 100 some bucks to fix.

AtomicX 10-21-2007 10:35 PM

Yes, thats exactly what happened :( . Do you think the mechanic will know the problem is from a drift?

pawzbear 10-21-2007 10:43 PM

haha my dad found out the problem in no time at all.. even though my car always comes last at the shop b/c its, well, my dads.... haha but it was done in a snap.

oh yeh i think i know what ur asking.. and no he couldnt tell it was bc i had drifted it (what a silly thing to do.. poor alero =( )

Found out it was the pump. Costing me $375 for a new one + labor :(

pawzbear 10-22-2007 06:14 PM

ouch my pump WITHOUT labor was a tad over 100bucks. tell your mech to eat shit =-P oh yeh it was a remanned one tho. but we install that type all the time no problem ;) only quality parts.

Do you think the Power Steering Pump failure was do to my drift or was it just time for a new one and it craped out?

pawzbear 10-22-2007 10:01 PM

hah i dunno, mine crapped out right after i left tire marks all over the place so maybe. im no mechanical genious i wish someone else would chime in =(

YALEROYNOT 10-22-2007 10:15 PM

just replaced my pump in my 2000 gls yesteday ( $150 ) took me 3 hrs. borrowed a pully puller from the auto parts store for free ( $90) deposit. the new pump didn't come with a pulley. its not hard to do really.

AtomicX 10-22-2007 10:23 PM

Wow I got screwed huh.

AJules 10-22-2007 11:07 PM

lol, drifting in an alero?

just... why?

Hm, As you guys know, I just got a new power steering pump. I have already encountered a problem. If I hold the brake and turn the wheel, it vibrates the car like hell. Gah does this mean I need ANOTHER PUMP?!

Does it vibrate ALL THE TIME, or only at FULL turn? If only at full turn, check to make sure fluid is full. My mom had a Pinto that always vibrated and chattered at full turn.

Hey man, it was a '76 Pinto stationwagon, and I had soooooo much fun learning to drive in that car. My sister finally killed it though, by getting T-Boned in an intersection. Good thing she didn't get rear-ended!!!!:rolleyes2:

AtomicX 10-26-2007 10:33 AM

It Doesn't happen when you drive it, it is only happens when your idling and you turn the wheel, its not at a full turn, its any turn, even less then a quarter turn.
