Strange Noise....
Ok, so the other day i get in my car first thing in the morning to head to work. I'm just going along, not speeding or being agressive(sp), when i notice this sound, i guess its kinda like a hollow humm that goes with engine rpm, and I can really hear it when i slow down. It doesn't change when i make turns, just when i accelerate and decelerate. I don't think its the transmission..though it sounds like it, but I don't have any kind of slipping or anything abnormal. I'm thinking maybe this is a wheel bearing?
If it is that, its cool, I've got a brand new timkin bearing ready to go in..I just hope if this is a bearing, that its not one with a good sensor (my abs and trac off lights are on which indicate bad wheel sensor, I'm hoping its the same bearing thats throwing those "codes") If its not a bearing, would anyone have any other suggestions? If i can get a clip of the sound on here I certainly would post it. Thanks |
wheel bearing or axle

Bearing

third that.... sounds like a bearing

If the hum changes in relation to speed, than it is most likely the bearing, If it goes down everytime you shift, then back up, then down as you shift again, then it is most likely tranny. But, if it increase SOLELY related to vehicle speed, then I'd check bearings.

I had a feeling it was the bearing.. im just hoping its the same one with the bad sensor..

Wow this is totally weird I was about to post about the same thing. My fiancee has a 99 Alero. She also has the abs light and trac light on as well. But thats been on for like a year. She really doesn't have the money to get it fixed so we just let it go. We are hearing a noise that sounds like its coming from the front driver side tire. It kindof sounds like the big mud tires with big treads on an off road vehicle. When we accelerate it gets louder. When we decelerate it changes tone and is still pretty loud but just sounds slower for obvious reasons. When turning left or right the noise seems to change tone once again. I reved the car up in neutral at a dead stop and it sounds normal. The transmission is shifting ok and the power steering is working fine. I also think it might be the wheel bearing or possibly the tire became unbalanced. What do you guys think? What does it typically cost to get a wheel bearing replaced if that is the problem. Thanks

It was the wheel bearing on my car. Got it fixed today. It should fix your abs. Chances are that the bearing damaged your abs which is why it tripped your light because her light is off now.

the thing is, my lights have been on for quite a while...almost a year...and just a few days ago, the noise started...im hoping and praying its the same hub that needs replacing

We had the same problem with our alero. The light came on like a year ago and my fiancee didn't have the money to get it fixed so we let it go. What probably is going on is that the bearing has been going bad and it damaged the abs sensor. Since it wasn't fixed the issue just got worse which is why it probably started making noise. What sucks is she is still a broke college student and she still didn't have the money to fix it so I had to dip into my funds I had saved up for mods for my car. It ended up costing me $580 bucks to have both bearings fixed. I actually was trying to do it myself and would have saved half the money, but due to the lack of air tools I couldn't pull the job off. I almost had the whole bearing off with the exception of the three bolts holding the hub to the car. I actually broke my socket wrench trying to break it loose. When it broke I was like thats it Im having the shop do it. It probably would have taken me no more than 40mins to swap the parts out if I could have gotten those bolts loose. Oh well thats why I need to invest in some air tools next. Now I just need to figure out how rain water is leaking into her car through the HVAC system and her car will then have everything fixed again. |
Not to de-rail the thread
^^ Check the Inlet, make sure it's waterproof and whatnot. |
