im confused i read all the forums. some great ones by the way. ive got a 2004 gl1 there is no amp no monsoon no fancy radio package just plain jane setup. so after reading the posts ive got a migrane. alls i wanna do is install my aftermarket radio, from what i read even if i dont care about chimes and warning chimes i still cant just go buy a harness and connect it?? how can gm do that to people? i read somewhere that id still have to run some wire to the fuse panel? r u serious? what is the cheapest easiet way to make my aftermarket work and whats the cheapest way to make it work right with the chimes correctly also im not putting factory radio in my trunk and running wires thats psycotic to me. thanks for any help sorry i still dont gte it after all the threads?

if you don't want chimes, you can just connect the aftermarket to the existing wiring setup. then toss the old radio. (or sell it on here if someone needs one)

and the reason to run a wire over to the fuse box is to provide accessory power since most headunits have more features/power draw that you want to have fused before it enters the radio.

but honestly, if your complaining about having to run some wires, maybe changing the radio isn't for you...

but im confused ive installed plenty of headunits in plenty of cars never once did i have to run a extra wire to the fuse panel why is this car different from the rest?

If you noticed, when you turn off the car, the radio is still working till you open the door. Our vehicle is equipped with a relay that connects to the door sensor. When the door open it effective kills power to the radio.

The stock radio in the 2001-2004 models is controlled via the Class 2 data bus. It is basically a serial data signal which tells the radio to turn on/off (and also transmits the data for when to chime, the Theftlock VIN information, etc..) The radio turns on and off when the BCM tells it to. That's what the deal is with the adapter harnesses. They emulate the radio on the Class 2 network and provide a switched output for your aftermarket radio and a little box with a speaker which will produce the chimes. Otherwise you have to tap into a switched power source when to tell your new aftermarket radio when to turn on and off, because they obviously don't communicate on the Class 2 data bus.

i just used the harness/module sold by Periferial and it works exactly like stock. Chimes, turns off when you open your door, etc. Cost $90 on ebay but worth it.

I got a 99 Alero with the Tape and Cd HU. I Bought a Kenwood CD and an adapter. Will I have similar problems installing it?

Nope, it only applies to '01-'04. If you have the "Oldsmobile" branded radio you're fine.
