transmission issues

is it bad when your transmission fluid looks like brown metallic paint?

all hilarity aside, i think im in serious need of a transmission fluid / filter change, or perhaps even a flush, but i think that would do more bad than good at this point in the tranny's life.

starting to slip a bit, and when put into first gear while rolling at any speed (off the throttle) its like it was put into neutral-

yes this is mostly my fault for neglecting the transmission and kinda driving it hard, but.. now im paying for it, and tips are welcome!

I was thinking about changing out every bit of fluid, and changing out the filter.. would that help much? - or does it sound like it's to far gone?

what's the mileage? might be time for a tune-up. get some sea-foam. Try that out. if you're still having issues then, then move up to the filters, then flushes. etc. start at the cheapest options first.

Midgear 05-31-2008 10:50 PM

they make a seafoam for transmissions?

a tune-up for a transmission would be new fluid and filter? (sorry, gotta ask..)

mileage = 126,000 miles

that i know of, the transmission fluid hasnt been touched since 1999, but im not 100% sure on that, and if that's the case, i hope nothing is seriously damaged.

i'll try this seafoam stuff and see what happens-

AlbinoMonkeyRat 05-31-2008 11:12 PM

shit...it's late for me...my bad. Sea foam is just for fuel system....but still, my last statement stands. check/replace cheapest stuff first. And now that I see your numbers....yeah, a flush might be a good idea. lol

Midgear 05-31-2008 11:23 PM

sure the flush wont damage anything? id hate for it to go good for the first week then just take a shit on the road

Midgear 06-01-2008 11:13 AM

bump!

AlbinoMonkeyRat 06-01-2008 11:27 AM

i had mine flushed a couple years ago and it runs better........all it is is cleaning out the old shit and putting new fluid in. if ANY of your fluids are looking like brown metallic paint, then it's bad news. (unless that's the color of your car and you JUST painted it. LOL)

Midgear 06-01-2008 12:40 PM

i've heard that a flush will actually damage an older or a worn transmission further.. is that true? O_o

negolien 06-01-2008 12:54 PM

Chances are if it's slipping it's already too late. I had issues with my older olds. Once it started slipping it was just a matter of time before it completely took a dump. Of course I raced her and drove the living shit outta the car but /shrug lol. As for color as far as I know the fluid is still a red color unless they changed it. My advice would be to start saving some pennies and prepare for a rebuild or a new tranny.

Im having trans slip. Im buying one of these as I type. Im going to replace the stock filter (I think) and the fluid. Altough a guy I know who is a transmission tech said just add this external filter and replace fluid...

negolien 06-01-2008 01:13 PM

let us know how that works out for ya.

Midgear 06-01-2008 03:21 PM

just adding an external filter, but leaving the regular filter in the transmission? O_o

id at least change out the old crapped up filter that's actually caught all that junk instead of just adding an external filter lol

unless im not understanding what that external filter is..

Vinalero 06-01-2008 03:34 PM

just change the fluid. What happens is that sometimes it is dirt that "holds" the gear together and when you clean the tranny, if the dirt is out, the tranny will run like crap after that and eventually fail.

Only changing the fluid and not flushing the tranny should not do any arm.

I was looking around on milzymotorsports.com- will the 4T65 tranny bolt straight up? or does there have to be a bit of modification for it to fit? anything computer wise that has to be done? im going to research this and check back-

EDIT: looks like a few things are required before the transmission can go in.. can it all be done on your own, or is a shop required?

Were you looking at the 30 buck one or the 80buck one. And post a how to if you do it yourself, cause it sounds interesting.

Midgear 06-27-2008 08:18 PM

finally i get a chance to post.. and im at work- brewahah.

anywhoo.. i got my transmission fluid changed out by a quick lube, they hooked a pump up to the tranny that pumps fluid in and sucks the old crap out, untill its clean, and they said they pump at a low pressure, or a pressure that matches what the transmission is pumping at untill the crap is out and only new fluid remains.. now heres the funny part

it took 25 quarts of transmission fluid pumped through it to get it cleaned lol. and now it shifts normal, going into first it GRABS and slows down, rather than drop to idleing rpm's.. but im still having a slight bit of slip when giving it hell off the line (had to test that out, did it intentionally, was not racing)

any cheep fix for that, or am i destined for an overhaul.
