aftermarket stereo
Hi Guys
I tried searching teh forums but cant find what I am looking for I have a 2001 Alero Base Model (GL I think) no keyless entry. I want to replace my factory radio with an aftermarket one. I have done this before on other cars what I dont know is what factory wires are what The new steroo has 4 pairs that are marked for speakers and 3 additional wires . Which wires would i Splice them into on the factory wires Thanks Chaimv |
spend 20 bucks and get the wire adapter that you'd need for your car. colors should match up.. goto best buy or abt or any audio place
|
NEVER CUT THE STOCK WIRE HARNESS!! spend the extra 20 at wal-mart even, saves alot of time! and ull be thankfull later!!
|
Those harnesses should also be identified so you know which wires are which to save any confusion on your install.
|
Thanks for the replies.
I tried looking for the adapter but have not been able to find one at bestbuy or walmart here in toronto, on . If I choose to splice into the origional wire harness. I am not planning on cutting it off just attaching wires in the middle of the origional do you know which collor wire is what in the origional harness thanks chaimv |
Try circuit city then! or order online from crutchfield. Someone has it
|
Try Canadian tire for the harness or any stereo shop would haved one. That would probably be the easiest way to go. The harness would give you extra wire so you are not reaching into the dash to try and wire it up.
|
Harness shouldn't be too tough to find. Another thing to think about when you install the head unit is to run new speaker wire. It will be a good bit more work, but the results will be worth it. The stock wiring isn't all that great when you compare it to some aftermarket 14 or 16 gauge. Cutting up the factory harness (even if you are just splicing) is a hack way to go about things though...no matter what route you take.

I got mine at a little car customizing place. Specifically it was listed for the Grand Am of the same year.
|
do not cut the harness
|
If you are buying a harness I don't see the need to rewire the speakers unless you are amplifing them. If you are just replacing the HU then I wouldn't rewire stock speakers.

I agree 100%! Only a moron cuts the factory wires. |
If you are in Toronto, you could easily find one at Future Shop, 2001 Audio, or Best Buy, Walmart, Canadian Tire, or take a drive to find a little Car Audio Shop...There is one in Newmarket called Nosh Audio, they are decently priced, or Whitby HiFi on Hwy 2... if they don't have one, they could easily get it for you... I used one for a 2000 Cavalier in my car, same pins/wires etc. and it works great.

Even splicing into factory wiring isnt good. Thats list a last straw type of thing.
I would just order one online. Hacking into factory wiring of any type is rarely a good experience. |
Thank guys
I will try loking for the harness under similar gm models. Thanks for the list of palces that they can be found Chaimv |
