Is there s trick to getting the stock CD player to work?

The stock (CD & Casette combo) in my 1999 GL model would rather eject the CD's than play them. It either ejects them outright. or takes them in and makes noise, then rejects them. If I try multiple times it does the same thing. Waiting a few minutes and trying again sometimes works.

And this is on a car that for all practical purposes is new. It has ~21,000 miles on it and it was my mom's car before I got it, and I doubt that she even used it. And it's not like there was a little kid showing crap in it, etc.

Other than Loonie's comment about them being "tempermental" I haven't found any mention of this problem here.

That and when I search places like Crutchfield, I don't see dounbl DIN units for this car even listed, and all the single DIN ones I've seen posted do look like crap (from the picture thread).

This is my backup car, so I'm really not all that interested completely redoing the stereo system either.

I had the same problem, but mine had more miles on it. I just bought one from a junk yard and replaced it. I never determined for sure if it was related, but I had problems with my 99 early on. Condensation from the A/C duct, which runs above the radio, would drip down into the radio. My CD's would come out of the player wet. Not sure if it contributed to the demise of my HU or not. Supposedly they fixed it, but now that I have my dash apart, I don't see where anything was actually done, so I plan on wrapping my ducts before I put it all back together.

I think the single din's look fine, you just gotta make them fit, and double din's are ugly as hell if they aren't Nav/touchscreen. good luck :O. you could get single din and make your own trim so it fits smoothly :p

I would try running a lens cleaning cd thru it a few times.

Also all burned CDs must be finalized otherwise they wont play. i got a 97 buick and it wont play burned cds no how no way, unless its a disc to disc copy!

These are all regular pressed CD's, and they aren't getting wet either.
I there a difference between an early 99 and a late 99 or something?

Also, I was thinking that it would be nice to get a double DIN with a built in CD changer if I were to change it. Otherwise I'd get a single DIN and use the extra space to throw in a small voltmeter.

That would be lonnie thank you, and once that Cd player craps out there is no trick to fix it. I tried everything when it went bad and nothing worked. Other then getting the factory to repair it or get you a new one, your best bet would be to get an aftermarket deck. I'm sure in the long run you would like it alot more.

Probably so true.

TheEdgeofSanity 08-12-2008 07:26 PM

mine does the same thing. I've given up on the cd player and use a portable cd player connected to a tape adapter kit...

Time to get rid of it. Even though it doesn't work I still got mine incase I want to sell the car or something, and don't want to leave a hole!

I thought about doing that too, but if you do that, how do you know how many miles or on the JY radio?

MattismodderX 08-14-2008 11:40 AM

the same thing happend to my 02. it would spit it out 30x before accepting it, then one day when the battery died (due to corrosive wire around it (a month after i bought the car)) it completly stopped working. the cd is still in the player. i just use the cassette to mp3 adapter right now. seems to work fine. i miss my cd player tho (wont even eject the cd)

That sucks. That's why I get the CD. Rip it to the PC. Burn a copy of it. and keep the original in a safe place cause I can resell them for a decent price :) Just say only used once then sell it :)

Hey. I bought the music still :) I used to buy CD's but not anymore. I didn't have my "sources" back then. I don't sell the burnt copy anyway so I guess it's fine

meadus101 08-15-2008 10:43 AM

haha, Not in the US.

Canada Ftw.

Btw. the trick to getting the stock CD player to work, is replace it.

Malix 08-20-2008 06:20 PM

Walmart and 30 bucks should fix your problem for now lol....

meadus101 08-21-2008 01:50 AM

Yea, the Wal-mart Cheapo Dual brand decks are not horrible.

Better than the stock.

zzyzzx 08-25-2008 09:13 AM

Yeah, but I'd need a conversion kit, and I'm guessing that I'd have to get that at Crutchfield, or someplace else online. Assuming that I have the factory amp (how do I know) then I could put in just about anything, but I'd prefer one that's black and does HD radio.

I finally talked to the person who was the first owner of the car (my mom) about this, and she said that she only used the CD player 3 times in 1999 and then never used it again (and it worked fine when she did). She also never used the tape player. Anyway, since my CD player is essentially new, is there a possibility that I just have dust in it, or something? I can try blowing in compressed air or something if that would help.

DansGen1Alero 08-29-2008 09:50 AM

First they are not double dins, they are GM or din and a halfs, thats why you wont find any on crutchfield, I can sell you mine, I never used it, ripped that bitch out the day it came in on the truck, just has a woodgrand piece on it, I dont think it was a combo tho, I could be wrong, its for a 99 GLS model, but no souped up sterio (I knew I was ripping it all out anyway)
