Questions About Struts.

Well after 3 months of hearing my rear right strut mount bangin and my shot front shock i decided to do Struts and mounds. Just a few questions about what i can do.

By reading other fourms and such ive been leaning towards Malibu struts.

soo im just wondering what is the best strut/mount that bolts on no fab work that will drop the HO the most. A buddie of mine was saying they have something called easy strut or quick struck. when the spring and evrything is conpressed. i dont have the tool soo i thought that would be good idea. But will the other struts come like that.

please any idea's or anything i should know ill be doing this this up comming week Aug 22nd befor my birthday. as my dad is buying me paint and primmier to paint my car this winter.

thanks

Well if you are going to do it yourself, you can rent a spring compressor from Autozone. Actually it's not even renting since they give you the money back when you return it. I didn't do mine myself since I really didn't trust myself to do it I probably still wouldn't do it.

Malibu struts? any strut tthat fits a Malibu or Grand Am will fit the Alero. Mechannaly speaking all the cars are the same ;)

Struts don't give you drop, springs do. It really doesn't matter what struts you use. It's a shaft and tube. It doesn't care if the car sits at stock height or dropped 2 inches. A lot of guys, including myself, are running and will suggest KYB GR2 struts. They are a nice strut and a high quality one at that. I have around 40K on mine and they still hold good.

my struts have 126 thousand miles on em and they still hold good :p

You should be 1/2 way though you're 3rd set by now ;)

define "bad" strut ? or worn-

Redog 08-14-2008 08:25 PM

Too much bounce, and poor alingmnet and tire wear

Midgear 08-14-2008 08:28 PM

doesnt bounce at all, I can open the door and stand on the side of the car and jump up and down and jump off and the car instantly stops moving..

so far the only treadwear that has happened is from being retarded.

car doesnt pull left or right.. mabey they were changed right before I got it.. any way to tell if they are original?

yep I have 187,000 miles, my suspension is stiff, cliff thought i had lowering springs/stiffer suspension.

My struts started leaking and the mechanic almost died when I told him they've never been changed..the car was alomst at 100K at the time.

They MIGHT still have a tag on them ;)

had the same issue. I replaced the struts but not the mounts and then ended up wrecking the struts and having to replace everything. my advice is to go with monroe gas-x quick struts and mounts (make SURE u rplace the mounts) and u wont need a spring compressor.

Ya, I was surprised it wasn't bouncier than it was. Holds up well!

Steven01 08-15-2008 02:16 AM

ok what would be a good set up with a drop around 1.5-2 inch?

JOEY GLADSTONE 08-15-2008 02:17 AM

KYB GR-2's or KYB AGX's with eibachs lowering kit

Midgear 08-15-2008 02:18 AM

what -exactly- does the strut provide.. the ride quality and/or firmness? or just something to help hold the cars big ass off the ground..

JOEY GLADSTONE 08-15-2008 02:20 AM

the quality/firmness would be a combination of your strut and springs. i know on my air struts if i adjust it to stiff on the strut itself the ride quality gets so shitty but it handles very well

Midgear 08-15-2008 02:24 AM

air struts? is that a strut or are you talkin about bags? I've heard of gas struts.. but air? lol

Gr1m 08-15-2008 02:26 AM

i was talking about my air ride, its basically the same thing as your suspension but instead of having a spring i have an inflatable bag.
