Yes, get it fixed right away. You are getting coolant in the oil, which is the worse type of LIMG leak. Water/coolant in the oil makes the oil not lube the motor as well. If you keep driving it and not get it fixed, when you do get it fixed you'll see blue smoke from the tailpipe, showing serious engine wear |
and then the engine goes *boom boom*... just ask our 1990 astro van.
Yup stop and fix now or pay a LOT more later...

since this thread exists.. i wont start a new one-
I just went to check my coolant.. makin sure all the cars are prepped for this "horrible" winter we have coming.. my reservoir was bone dry  so i go to wal mart and pick up a gallon of dex cool 50/50 for 11 bucks.. take it home and when i go to pluck the reservoir cap off.. it hissed.. and started spewing fluid out the overflow hose.. where the hell did all this fluid come from.. so i get the cap off, and start addin a bit of fluid.. keep adding.. keep adding.. and it nearly takes the entire gallon.. where did i loose all this coolant at? no puddles / stains under the car.. no funny smells, no smoke out the exhaust.. oil is still clean.. its royal purple oil, but its changed color from purple to this light tan.. but its not dirty or anything. the coolant that spewed out was a clean orange.. looked like brand new coolant- surely it didnt evaporate? |
How long has it been since you added coolant last?
sounds like a slow leak, something thats just seeping out of the LIMG. when you got the car hot, it expanded an air bubble that was trapped and it displaced the coolant which is why it overflowed. I had a simialar problem with my grand am a few years back, I kept purging the system and it seemed like there was always air that came out, finally ripped into the top end and found my LIMG had melted and was dumpping coolant into the oil and cyclinders. given mine was much worst but same basic idea, theres a leak inside the motor or a slow leak on the outside. Are you still having this problem?
Went to go check my oil, and wow she was low. My car has 83,000 miles on it and this is the first time I ever had to add oil. The underneath is wet with oil also and from the top by the head I can see oil. Possable LIMG?
Mid, I had the same thing happen several weeks ago. My oil looks fine. I will look at it when we get together and see if I notice anything you are missing.
Talk about craziness... mine just went on my car as well... my neighbour came over and said yup its a gasket... so he is getting me prices, and im buying the beer... it should be up and running again by early next week when he has the time to fix it up... til then, i try and get my other car on the road... hopefully its not too much for a temp. permit for a week!!!

haha my brother is a mechanic and I had him look at it and he said thats what it looks like. He said he isnt changing it though, he said he would rather change out the whole motor than tear it all apart. I'm broke anyways so it looks like I am just going to have to keep an eye on it for now. :( anyone wanna trade? I got an alero, lol!
I sell the gasket kit with everything you need for 59.99 plus shipping. Its a pretty easy fix if you can follow a shop manual. Just takes time and you don't need to be a mechanic to do it. These engines are pretty easy to work on so I am surprised he would rather pull a motor than the do gasket. Guy I used to be friends with had done the gasket job so many times that he would probably laugh at the idea of dropping the cradle and swapping the motor compared to doing the gasket, if it wasn't for money. For money, you are getting the engine swap cause it pays a lot better.
