New Stereo

I finally broke down today and got rid of my stock radio. I ended up going with a pionner head unit so I can hook up my ipod. No more cd's finally! I also got my stock speakers replaced with powerbass 4x6 and 6x9's I never heard of this company but they sound decent way better than stock. Anyone ever heard of powerbass before?

If anyone is interested I will give away my stock 6x9's and Factory headunit.
It works good just has the paint peeling off the seek button and sometimes you have to put the cd in more than once before it takes. Just pay me shipping USPS from 44410 and it is yours. Have a good weekend guys.

A friend of mine has the power bass 6.5 components. They sound okay, and hes had them a couple years now, so they do last longish.

Ryan from Ohio 05-17-2009 10:39 AM

Powerbass is alright stuff.

Fi-Alero 05-17-2009 06:14 PM

We are powerbass dealers at the shop I work at. They are actually a good budget brand. I'm not a fan of the way their speakers sound tho because I like a little brighter highs. Powerbass speakers have a very stock-ish sound to them.

I've had powerbass 12's for a long time and they are kicking just as good as the day I bought them.

Yo, Can our cars handle a 250W RMS AMP? I'll get a capacitor if it's needed, I did cook an altenator in an old cavy I used to have...

I might want your factory head unit. What year and type is it from and does it work properly? I have a 1999 Alero and even though my CD player is barely used, it still doesn't work.

Yes...I got a 600wrms with a 1.5farad cap and I have no issues...(knock on wood).

I'm not worried about my battery - I don't want to cook the altenator, which is easy, and far more annoying/expensive than replacing the battery

You think a 250rms would need a capacitor? 0.5farad maybe? Or stock should be good...

And if I DO put the cap on it, would it hurt anything? I may want to upgrade later... :D

colonel6632 05-19-2009 01:41 AM

i'm running 1200w rms stereo in my car... i did the big 3 upgrade using 1/0g cable and have a 1g cable running to a splitter in the back.

alternator and battery have been holding up for now... had this setup since about december. When the subs hit... all lights will dim in my car... and the tach actually drops 300-400rpm. but the alternator is still holding up... i think it's starting to die though... it doesn't seem like the music needs to be as loud to get dimming anymore... i don't have a capacitor either

Ryan from Ohio 05-19-2009 10:53 AM

250 WRMS wont cook an alternator in an Alero.

When you start getting into the 1000-1500 WRMS range you need to vigilant.

At 125% rated capacity an alternator starts to bun up.

Food for thought!

cherrington17 05-19-2009 11:07 AM

caps don't do as much as you think. Unless you have a HUGE system. instead of wasting money on them, save for a better alt, or an overdrive pulley from RfO/Cargodz

250WRMS won't hurt anything.

Sweeeet. Thanks for the info! One more thing, I've tapped the ignition wire from the head unit onto the yellow constant. Now the stereo can be turned on with or without the key. It powers off completely ( or at least looks like it does ) Think this would drain the batt at all?

Fi-Alero 05-20-2009 12:45 AM

You don't need a capacitor, your amp already has them inside :)

I run around ~4k on the stock alt with no problems at all. I do have a kinetic 2400 in the back though.

AleroDrime 05-20-2009 01:07 AM

ask ryan but i think the rule of thumb for a capacitor is 1 Farad to every 600 rms, dont hold me to that though

as long as you dont forget to turn it off, why not make it easy and tap the sunroof fuse, that way no worries
