wheel bearings

ok. wheel bearings is my assumption, but i want to make sure it isnt something else before i spend money on bearings and dont need them

when i drive my alero, i feel, not so much hear, but feel a humming vibration coming from the floor boards. its not worse when i turn the wheel either way, and i dont know if its on the passenger side or not, but it is for sure on the driver's side. is it wheel bearings?

oh and on struts - my front struts have always kind of creaked a little bit, but the creaking has gotten much louder, and the rear has started to creak, but only sometimes. do they need replaced?

ive got the 3400, and about 82,xxx miles on the car right now.

TIA

creaking can be bad strut plates, the bearings in those go, atleast thats the issue with mine, ive done a couple bearings

Well at 82k miles on a 6 year old car you're already due for strut replacement, do all 4 at once so you only have to do one alignment afterwards and it will cost you 500 or less total.

That humming sensation isn't always wheel bearings, it can be a hub or even the tire itself. Inspect and rotate the tires when you do your struts, see if it makes any difference and see what happens, you'll figure it out sooner or later.

btw, hub = bearing...

well, if you have no lights, and it's not a hearable humming, don't worry, what kind of tires do you have?

and do ALL struts/mounts... so easy to do yourself also.. and lower it while you're in there

white04alero 01-21-2010 11:48 AM

i thought about lowering while i was doing the struts, figured i would.

and the tires i have are goodyear viva 2
could it just be road noise??

CactusWill 01-21-2010 03:44 PM

No those tires shouldn't make much noise unless there is some unusual wear or damage to them.

I have those tires too, not too shabby. Pretty good traction and are really quiet.

Well you need to repalce the hub(s) that are making the noise...

struts replace all and spings that you want ....
eibach are good for 1.5 front and 1.2 rear...(you can cut the rears if you like.)
cost for someone to do it fron 450 to 650 with aligment.
I would get quotes before...and you might find the struts cheap online..

good luck.

For the wheel bearings, jack the car up. Grab a wheel and see if its loose.

My bearings started out as an annoying hum, then vibrations, then death.

Nate's Alero 01-22-2010 06:52 AM

mine is at vibrations.... did the noise stage for 34K miles... braking.....vibration

accel...MAJOR vibration, and my daily commute is all highway.... tree here i come!

FamousFresh 01-22-2010 08:51 AM

ok i seen somethin about lowering the car while he was changing the struts i

want to lower mine but i dont know where to get the spring so can somebody

point me in the right direction to some good springs
