As the topic asks:

For those who change their own oil, what kind and weight do you use?

I was thinking about Mobil 1 5w-30

Any ideas or suggestions?

10w-30 in the warm months. 5w-30 in cold months. Quaker State syn blend. I've been reluctant to switch over to full synthetic, from some of the articles I've read.

I just put in 4.5 quarts of quakerstate 5w-30 today, had to get inventive for a makeshift lift, used some sheets of wood n drove up on em, made it easy to get to the oil pan, gotta love the easy change of the oil filter on the ecotecs!

Walmart brand: 5W/30 synthetic

Oldsmopimp 07-22-2004 10:44 PM

since the first oil change its been 4.5 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic with a fram sure-grip filter(every 3,000 +/- a couple hunded miles). Also, one bottle of valvoline syn-tech fule injector cleanor every oil change. Same poop, year round. My car is stored in winters.

As far as mobil one, I have friends that do mechanic work on the side and its a fact that when u tear an engine apart thats been ran on synthetic(any brand really) with frequent changes, there is vitually NO engine wear, even at higher miles.

I agree with Oldsmopimp. I use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5-30 with Purolator Pure One filter. BTW, what do you guys think about Purolator Pure One filters? I'm open to any recommendations. Anyhow, I am ALL for Mobil 1.
I changed my U & L Intake Manifold gaskets myself and when I looked at the Pushrod ends and Rocker Arms, they looked pristine. Mine has 54,000 miles on it.

Thanks for the ideas everybody. I bought a case of Mobil 1 5w-30 last week and a AC Delco filter.

If it doesn't rain, I may do it on Monday.

For now, I'm an oil change virgin

i use what i have readily available to me...john deere 5W30...funny enough, it lasts longer then any other oil i've tried

I'm kinda curious about the K&N Oil filter, is it like reuseable or whats what big advantage to it. I haven't really looked at it much but I've always kinda wondered

They claim better filtration and oil flow.....comparable to a Mobil 1 oil filter. They are good filters but on the expensive side.

My car has only had Mobil 1 5W-30 since it's first oil change, and I use an oversized PF-52 AC Delco filter.

Steberino, Purolator Pure One filters are reported to be very good.

alerochick242 07-29-2004 10:06 AM

Good choice, Red Dog. Mobil 1 is the absolute best ( I use Mobil 1 5w 30 also). Also, for you guys that use Quaker State; you might want to switch. The only reason I say this is because my dad used Quaker State in his truck ever since the day he bought it (for several years); however, when he went to get his valve cover gaskets replaced, the valves and everything were really gummy. Just something to think about...
