2.4 liter Sputter louder exhaust then normal

Well driving my car home from work the other day and noticed my car is starting to sound like a ricer louder exhaust and has a sputter at idle. Any ideas what could be causing this. I checked the exhaust dont see any visible leaks my muffler is faily new. it did rain hard that morning on the way to work and I went through some big puddles at about 40 mph. Dont know if that had anything to do with it. Any input would be appreciated. Have a great weekend guys.

Loose or cracked exhaust manifold?

Lucalare 06-25-2010 06:04 PM

Loose EGR could do it too

Ouch! get the magnaflow stainless downpipe/cat combo, probably cheaper than a stock replacement any way

That is a very nice setup and well worth the investment cause at this point I'm guessing also the damage may be rather more extensive... but not really where the immediate problem is. The damage appears to be behind the rear strut and before the muffler, a replacement piece or patch could be done. A skilled exhaust person would be worth seeing, IMO. Parts places do sell bandage style wrap-on repair kits that I have seen work quite well when done carefully (use goggles and a good wire brush).

Don't panic, check everything, post more pics if you want. It's not likely to get much worse very fast but it won't go away without some effort. Money is always a concern and if things don't have to be replaced... Good Luck!

oh, good call, i was looking at it wrong thinking it was the downpipe. If you're into aftermarket i would just have a shop install a custom cat back, and a magnaflow for a mild tone, or flowmaster 60, 70, or 80 series for a little more aggressive sound. If you like stock, then just have them replace that section of pipe, or you could try the wrap that widbyj mentioned, if they have it.

going to try high temp rtv and patch kit from autozone as a temp fix for now then get a new pipe down the road

No RTV! Just clean very well with a wire brush and use the wrap-patch. When I've done it in the past the kit had enough gauzy stuff to wrap around a few times, bare wire wrapped around secures it and then heat from exhaust cures it solid. (RTV would either melt or burn cause of exhaust heat)

Did you patch or replace?

If patch, did it fix the sputtering at Idle?

I have a 2001 2.4, that suddenly started to sputter at idle and the exhaust note has gotten louder. Other then the sputter at idle the engine seems to be working fine.

i had that for a little bit then it went away then i seized up the motor
